Arsenal vs Crystal Palace: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 20th January 2024
Kick off at 12:30pm GMT
Venue: Emirates Stadium

Match Preview:

Arsenal have not played a league game this year and they will have to break the shackles off from what has been a poor period for the club. The Gunners have gone their last 4 competitive games with no wins but a win here would be a major boost for their title credentials. The club's one game this year so far has been in the FA Cup where they were knocked out against Liverpool. In the league they have lost their last two games which came against Fulham and West Ham and this has dropped Mikel Arteta’s side into 4th place. As it stands the club has 40 points and are five points behind league leaders Liverpool. The problem is that Manchester City have emerged and Aston Villa are also in between Arsenal and 1st place. However with Villa not playing until the end of the month the Gunners would move past them and go into 3rd place on goal difference.

At home Arsenal has the 4th best record with 23 points won from 30 and they have lost just once here so far although that was in their last home game. The Gunners have a 70% win rate at home and are averaging 2 goals per game here. Crystal Palace played in midweek in their FA Cup replay with Everton and lost 1-0. To compound matters it was away from home and all the while they knew that a better team in Arsenal were able to rest. Palace are in 14th place with 21 points and rumours are still circulating that manager Roy Hodgson could be sacked. Form has slightly picked up for the Eagles though with just one loss in their last four games. Like Arsenal they haven’t played a league game this year and in their last match they managed to win their fifth game of the season with a good 3-1 victory over Brentford. The clubs last away game ended in defeat against Chelsea and on the road Palace have 12 points from 10 games played. Indeed their away record is slightly better than their home and it was only just over a month ago that they were able to claim a 2-2 draw at the champions Manchester City. The clubs most frequent away result so far is the loss where they have recorded 40% of their results this way.

Arsenal vs Crystal Palace Prediction:

Mikel Arteta needs to see a reaction from his players, drop points here and there is a real concern that Arsenal’s season will be unravelling even in January. The problem that they have is it isn’t just one team they are up against but two threats this time in Manchester City and Liverpool and Aston Villa have to be respected too. Tottenham are also on the same points, so Arsenal really are obliged to win this game. This match does seem perfectly set up for a victory for the home side. We all know the qualities of this Arsenal team and even though form has suffered lately they have had a mini break and one would feel been rejuvenated as they were able to take to a training camp in Dubai.

Arsenal has a great record over Crystal Palace and the Eagles are not in the best of form, this will be a difficult game for Hodgson’s side. The bookies think so too and Arsenal are 1.25 to win, so we will look into different markets but we only see a home win this weekend for Arteta’s side.
