Arsenal vs Chelsea: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Tuesday 2nd May 2023
Kick off at 8pm BST
Venue: Emirates Stadium

Match Preview:

In recent times when these two great sides have come together it has been Arsenal trying to dent Chelsea’s title ambitions but this season it will be switched. Arsenal will come into this game in 2nd place which has been a rare occurrence this season, indeed new league leaders Manchester City have only been in 1st place for 18 days of the season and with their weekend win over Fulham they have gone a point in front of Arsenal.

You’d have to think that the league title may be on a knife edge but if the Gunners were to drop points here the title could be lost. A draw here would feel like a defeat and the worry for Mikel Arteta’s side has been the number of draws they have chalked up recently and they have no wins in their last four games. Just 3 points have been won from a possible 12 and if Arsenal were to lose the league title everyone is going to remember that it was in April when they lost it. Arsenal won’t want to be reminded of their last game which ended in a thrashing against Manchester City, which Pep Guardiola’s side won 4-1 and their last home game finished in a 3-3 draw against bottom side Southampton.

Chelsea have been undeniably poor under Frank Lampard’s return, granted they have played some good football but the end result has been the same, defeat. Lampard currently has a win rate of 0% from his five games back in charge and games that you could usually bank your money on the Blues winning have ended in defeat. The latest one came against Brentford at home and if it wasn’t for the fact that the Blues had 39 points before sacking Graham Potter they could have been in danger of going down, so bad their form has been. Indeed based on the last five games Chelsea would be in the bottom three. They have picked up just one point from a possible 15 with their last away win coming against Leicester back in March.

Team News:

Arsenal: The good news is that there are no injuries for the club, but William Saliba, Mohammed Elneny and Takehiro Tomayisu remain sidelined long term.

Chelsea: Marcus Bettinelli has a knock and is 50/50 to return, Mason Mount is out with a pelvic issue, Kalidou Koulibaly is out for at least 3 weeks with a hamstring as is Reece James. Marc Cucurella misses out with a thigh strain and is not due back for at least two weeks. Armando Broja is out for the season with his knee injury.

Arsenal vs Chelsea Head to Head:

Last season Chelsea won this fixture 2-0.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Arsenal won 1-0.

Chelsea have only managed one win over the Gunners in the last seven meetings.

There is a 60% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

Arsenal vs Chelsea Prediction:

We should be in for an entertaining game and we expect Arsenal to get back to winning ways. Chelsea should be and can be dangerous with the players that they have but have simply rarely shown it this season, so much so that it is going to end up costing 3 managers their jobs by the end of the season. Frank Lampard’s side are like a circus and apart from showing good possession at times they lack goals and mental stability and it must be a real worry for fans to be witnessing such a downfall only after two years since they won the Champions League.

It is true that Arsenal have been rocking of late and their latest form may well cost them the league title even if they win this game. But Arteta’s players are in tune with the manager's ambition and we expect a hard fought but professional win from the Gunners, they are clearly not facing the same Chelsea side from a decade ago and recent results heavily favour Arteta’s team.
