Wolves vs Liverpool: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Thursday 23rd January 2020
Kick off at 8pm GMT
Venue: Molineux Stadium

Match Preview:

There is just one game on Thursday evening to complete the midweek fixtures in the Premier League and league leaders Liverpool will take on Wolves.

The home side are in 6th place with 34 points and could make a real challenge for a top 4 place after Chelsea dropped two points and drew against Arsenal. A win would see Wolves within 3 points of the Blues.

Wolves put in their display of the season as they made one of their best comebacks beating Southampton 3-2. They were 2-0 down and two of their comeback goals were scored by in form striker Raul Jimenez. The win was even more impressive given that the Saints had been in such glorious form.

At home Wolves have only lost 2 games with one of those being a few weeks ago when they lost 2-1 to Tottenham. However they have only won 4 games from the 11 played at Molineux Stadium and have the same record at home as they have away. Wolves have been very good this season showing the same consistency that they showed last year but you get the feeling that they could go up another level.

Liverpool have a 13 point lead over Manchester City, that’s the good news. The even greater news is that they have 2 games in hand, with one of course being the Wolves game. However even if Liverpool were to lose here and lose their game in hand, which is against West Ham, 13 points still equates to having to lose 5 more games, and Liverpool aren’t going to collapse like that. Here we are talking about a team who have not lost in the league for just over a year.

The Reds form is the stuff of dreams where from the last 10 games they have achieved maximum points scoring 24 goals in that time and conceding just 4. They have the best away record winning 28 points from 30 with only their 1-1 draw against Manchester United being the only blip on their record, and despite their busy schedule they show no signs of fatigue.

Team News:

Wolves: Diogo Jota looks like he will miss this game with an on going calf injury. The club have no new injuries coming into this game

Liverpool: Xherdan Shaqiri has recovered from his calf injury and should be available to be part of the squad for this game. James Milner is still out but the club have no new injuries ahead of the match

Wolves vs Liverpool Head to Head:

The last time the teams played here was in the FA Cup last year when Wolves won 2-1.

The last league match played here Liverpool won 2-0.

In the last 4 games played at Wolves, Liverpool have won 3 of them.

Wolves vs Liverpool Prediction:

With Wolves only losing 2 matches at Molineux Stadium this is a very difficult game for Liverpool, but everytime questions are asked of Liverpool they seem to be able to pass with flying colours. If Mohamed Salah is having a quiet period, in steps Sadio Mane. If Mane lacks goals, there is Roberto Firmino. Jordan Henderson in midfield is controlling the pitch and looking a better player by every passing game. How Wolves live with that we will find out soon enough but Wolves are a dangerous side and they can really give Liverpool a test. Wolves don’t win many games against Liverpool but they don’t get slaughtered by them either. We believe that Liverpool will win this game but it's unlikely to be by a big margin, and most of the recent games between these two haven't contained many goals. Also, Sadio Mane has a good recent record against Wolves and could be worth backing to get on the scoresheet.
