England Premier League

Venue: Olympic Stadium

Match Preview:

What a week it has been for Tottenham who have sacked Mauricio Pochettino and brought in Jose Mourinho. There will be a fantastic buzz around Mourinho’s first match as manager of Tottenham and his first in the dug out in 11 months since he was sacked as Manchester United manager last December.

This fixture has suddenly gone from being two big names associated with the Premier League who have been struggling, to simply Tottenham’s first game under Mourinho, one of the best managers of the past 20 years, and it will be fascinating to see how this game plays out.

Let’s first start with West Ham who have been in very poor form, and what is worrying is that the club have been playing without thought and have looked toothless on too many occasions this season. The Hammers have picked up just 1 point from their last 15 on offer and have fallen to 16th position. They have also gone their last 3 home games without a win, with their last match here ended in a 3-2 defeat against Newcastle who were previously struggling for goals.

In part Tottenham sacked Pochettino because he had won just 1 Premier League away game since the turn of the year and picked up just 3 points from their last 15 available, with no wins in the past 5 weeks in the league. Tottenham come into this game just a point above West Ham and a win could see the club move up into the top 10 depending on other results.

Based on away form only, Tottenham would be in 18th position with no wins and they are conceding on average 2 goals a game. Their last away match ended in a 1-1 draw at Everton.

Team News:

West Ham: Manuel Lanzini is out with a shoulder injury and is set to miss at least the next month. Goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski has a long term hip injury and isn’t due back until January

Tottenham: Erik Lamela still remains a doubt with a hamstring injury. Tanguy Ndombele will be assessed after his groin injury. Jan Vertonghen will also have a late test to see if he can return after his hamstring injury

West Ham vs Tottenham Head to Head:

Last season Tottenham won this fixture 3-1.

West Ham have not beaten Tottenham when being at home for the past 3 games.

There is a 50% chance based on recent games that there will be over 3.5 goals.

West Ham vs Tottenham Prediction:

Even before Pochettino was sacked this was always going to be a hard game for West Ham because even though Tottenham have struggled they had showed some promise in their recent matches over Liverpool and Everton. The problem for West Ham is that they are now coming up against a team with a new manager and in Jose Mourinho’s return to football it is a big ask to think that Tottenham will start negatively under him. This all spells bad news for West Ham.

The truth is Manuel Pellegrini is now fighting for his job at the Hammers, and this could be made worse by Saturday afternoon. West Ham will certainly have to up their game and the club would love nothing more than to spoil Mourinho’s debut with Spurs but we don’t see this happening and think Tottenham can get back on track and start a new era under Mourinho. How long that lasts is anyone’s guess but we expect the team to get off with a bang!
