West Ham vs Liverpool: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Monday 4th February 2019
Kick off at 8pm GMT
Venue: Olympic Stadium

Match Preview:

The Monday night game will take place between West Ham and Liverpool in what should be an exciting game. On paper Liverpool will be the favourites but we must remember how West Ham at home have risen up to the challenges of playing the top teams this season. That includes taking a point from Chelsea when the game ended 0-0, which was during The Blues impressive unbeaten form in the first few months. The Hammers followed that result up by beating Manchester United in the next game.

As detailed below Manuel Pellegrini’s team will come into this match with some injuries, and the Chilean has had a decent season in that regard with all the absentees he has had to deal with. The club have lost their last two games which came against Bournmouth and Wolves and they were outclassed in both games. What will be worrying for Pellegrini is that his team were also toothless. After the Wolves loss, Pellegrini changed up the system and gave Andy Carroll more support and The Hammers switched from a 4-3-2-1 to a traditional 4-4-2, it made no difference and they still lost. However both games were away from home.

West Ham’s last home match ended impressively with a 1-0 win over Arsenal, this was with the 4-3-2-1 formation and it seems sure that Pellegrini will adopt this again. Also the club had 11 goal attempts against The Gunners which is no mean feat. To summarise the clubs season thus far is to say they have had some shocking results but they give more at home and against better quality. It is also worth nothing that The Hammers have lost just 1 game here since November.

Liverpool blew the chance to go 7 points clear when Manchester City lost in midweek, instead The Reds who were expected to beat Leicester at Anfield could only draw 1-1, and indeed Leicester were the better team on the night. It is still advantage Liverpool as they top the league standings.

For their standards Jurgen Klopp’s team have wobbled a little collecting 10 points from the last 15, but that recent form is still enough to be the best in the Premier League.

On the road Liverpool have the 2nd best record with 9 wins, 2 draws and just 1 defeat. They have conceded just 7 goals from 12 games which is the best record in the league.

Team News:

West Ham: The injury problems keep piling up for The Hammers with the latest one regarding striker Marko Arnautovic who has a foot injury. He will be given a late assessment before the game, but it is thought he hasn’t trained all week. New signing Sami Nasri is out of the Liverpool game with a calf injury and is not expected back until next week. Aaron Cresswell suffered a hamstring injury but it is thought to be just minor and he may be included in the squad. Lukasz Fabianski has an arm injury but Pellegrini thinks he will play. Jack Wilshire has been ruled out for the rest of the season with his ongoing ankle problems

Liverpool: Trent Alexander-Arnold has made progress with his knee injury but will miss this game. The defender is pencilled to be back next weekend. He is the only major injury the club have coming ino this game that isn’t long term

West Ham vs Liverpool Head to Head:

Earlier this season at Anfield, Liverpool won 4-0.

Liverpool have won the last 4 meetings where they have scored 16 goals in that time.

West Ham have not beaten Liverpool at home since 2016.

The last 5 meetings have a 100% success rate of over 3.5 goals.

West Ham vs Liverpool Prediction:

We know that Liverpool are already the better side but they also have the advantage of coming here with a squad that is 99% fit. West Ham may have some players back but they are still ravaged with injuries, although home form has been solid in recent months. They are odds on to win this game which doesn’t represent excellent value for is given that we know that Pellegrini’s team will fight at home when their backs are up against the wall. The Hammers would love to influence the league in some way and perhaps we shouldn’t completely disregard them. But Liverpool do look too strong for them and have a great record against them, home and away. Sadio Mane has scored 3 times against West Ham in as many games.

West Ham vs Liverpool Betting Tips:

Liverpool to beat West Ham with a -1 goal start at 1.91

Anytime goalscorer: Sadio Mane 2.25

Correct Score: Liverpool to win 3-0, 4-0 or 5-0 at 9.00, 15.00 and 29.00
