West Ham vs Chelsea: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Wednesday 1st July 2020
Kick off at 8:15pm BST
Venue: London Stadium

Match Preview:

West Ham are clinging on to safety but will need to start picking up points fast, however playing 4th placed and in form Chelsea would not be their preferred match right now.

The Hammers have lost both of their opening games since the restart, losing 2-0 at home to Wolves and by the same score line against Tottenham. Only goal difference is now keeping the club up.

David Moyes side are absolutely in relegation form where they have picked up 5 points from their last 30 and in the last 10 games on form they would be bottom of the league. Overall they have lost their last 3 games in a row and earned just 3 points from their last five. At home they have lost 8 games from 15 and are almost conceding 2 goals per game.

Chelsea look like they are on a mission to finish in 3rd place. Frank Lampard has looked bullish even when his side are winning games and you can tell how seriously he is taking his job. Lampard has a lot of connections with West Ham and would not want to help their plight, but at the same time he will know what his side have to do in this game if they want Champions League football next season.

The Blues are only 2 points clear of 5th place so a win is a must here. Form has been excellent, unbeaten in 5 games and with 3 wins in a row. Their last victory was over Manchester City which ended up confirming the title to Liverpool.

Chelsea have the 3rd best away record in the league, they are unbeaten in their last 3 trips, and have won 8 games this season on the road. With 31 goals scored only Manchester City can boast more.

Team News:

West Ham: Sebastien Haller has a hip injury there has been no update and it looks like he will miss this game. Arthur Masuaku is being pencilled in for this game after twisting his ankle. He remains 50/50 though. Robert Snodgrass could well miss the rest of the season with a back injury and a twisted ankle

Chelsea: Andreas Christensen has a hip injury which forced him to miss the clubs FA Cup game, it isn’t thought to be serious. Callum Hudson-Odoi is only 50/50 as needs match fitness. Christian Pulisic has a calf injury but it is thought to be minor and he should be available. Fikayo Tomori is expected to return from a muscle injury, but will be assessed

West Ham vs Chelsea Head to Head:

Earlier in the season West Ham beat Chelsea 1-0 in the reverse fixture.

Last season this fixture finished 0-0.

The last 5 meetings have all finished with under 2.5 goals.

West Ham vs Chelsea Prediction:

Chelsea are clearly the superior team but West Ham have a habit of raising their game in these matches, trying to be a thorn in the side of their London rivals. In reality the two teams are light years from one another, but we expect David Moyes side to dig deep and try and frustrate their opponents. Nobody would have given the Hammers a chance earlier in the season at Stamford Bridge and yet they won that game. However a clear argument could be brought to the table that Chelsea were still trying to find their way and footing under Lampard, right now they look like a beast of a team that would be happy to take on any club.

The one problem for Chelsea is despite their domination in games they are only getting over the line, but we feel that might not be the case in this encounter. We see them scoring at least a couple of goals, and being just too strong for West Ham.
