Watford vs Brighton: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 10th August 2019
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: Vicarage Road

Match Preview:

Watford had very strong periods last season and they will want to build on that when they open their campaign at home against Brighton.

The Hornets had a very good pre season winning 3 of their four matches including wins over Real Sociedad, QPR and Bayer Leverkusen.

Most of the players coming into Watford haven't been for large sums of money, with only right winger Ismaila Sarr from Rennes catching the eye at £27m, however they have snapped up Danny Welbeck from Arsenal on a free transfer which will certainly be a transfer to keep an eye on. On his day there is no doubting his quality, however he is very injury prone, so will this be an inspired signing or a very large wage bill spending a lot of time at the physio?

Brighton really struggled last season and even though Chris Hughton is a lovable figure it was obvious that he had to go. Brighton defended too much and in the end became afraid to lose and afraid to play.

The away side have actually spent quite a lot of money for them this summer headed by Adam Webster from Bristol City for £20m, Leandro Trossard from Genk for £18m, and center forward Neal Maupay from Brentford for £18m. What has been interesting for the club is that they haven’t lost any significant players, releasing many of the second string squad, making their net expenditure one of the highest in the league this summer at nearly £60m.

Team News:

Watford: Nathaniel Chalobah will miss this game through a lack of match fitness. Domingos Quina is out with a muscle injury. New signing Danny Welbeck is out with a lack of match fitness

Brighton: Yves Bissouma is out with a shoulder injury

Watford vs Brighton Head to Head:

The last time the teams played here Watford won 2-0.

Brighton have not won at Watford since 2012.

It’s been 6 games since both teams scored in the game.

Watford vs Brighton Prediction:

Our choice here is to back Watford to get the home win. They have some injuries and it would have been annoying for them that Danny Welbeck starts his career on the sidelines but they have been able to keep the bulk of their squad. They will struggle at times this season and their form will be all about how they perform at home, this is the type of the game where they will be looking for 3 points. They have a decent record over Brighton and we expect a good home win at the weekend.
