Tottenham vs Southampton: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Wednesday 5th December 2018
Kick off at 8pm GMT
Venue: Wembley Stadium

Match Preview:

Oh how Tottenham wish Arsene Wenger was still in charge of Arsenal, because let’s be fair it did seem that the tide was changing in the North half of London. But Unai Emery has arrived and with it Tottenham faced a 4-2 loss at the Emirates at the weekend.

In fairness Tottenham have been very good this season but they looked like a 1990s version of themselves in the 2nd half of the Arsenal defeat and they will have to pick themselves up just a few days later and be prepared for a match that they should win.

Tottenham are the only team in the league not to have drawn a game where they have 10 wins and 4 losses so far. They are in 5th place and have slipped 11 points behind Manchester City, though they have this game in hand. It would have pained the club to see Arsenal go above them even if it is just on goal difference.

Southampton’s big news was the sacking of Mark Hughes who walked away with £6m after his 9 month tenure. The club have been poor this season and are in 18th placed but at the same time there also seemed to be some fight in the Saints who did well to draw 2-2 with Manchester United, which turned out to be Hughes’ last game in charge.

Kelvin Davis will take charge of the club on a temporary basis. The Saints have won just 1 game away from home this season and have collected just 4 points from a possible 21 on the road.

Team News:

Tottenham: Erik Lamela has a thigh injury and is set to miss this game. Jan Vertonghen is suspended for one game after his two bookings and sending off v Arsenal.

Southampton: Mario Lemina is suspended for this game after amassing five yellow cards this season. Shane Long could return but is still a doubt. Danny Ings will be assessed and could make the squad after his hamstring injury. Another player hoping to be fit is Ryan Bertrand who has been out with a back injury

Tottenham vs Southampton Head to Head:

Tottenham won this game last season 5-2.

The last 5 meetings has seen both teams to score.

Tottenham vs Southampton Prediction:

Tottenham keep chalking up the points on most match days and they will be the odds on favourites to win this game. But we think the game will start very slowly and not build up momentum until the 2nd half. It may be worth backing the draw at half time for Spurs who should have more than enough quality to wrap this game up in the latter stages.
