Tottenham vs Man City: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 2nd February 2020
Kick off at 4:30pm GMT
Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Match Preview:

Jose Mourinho’s win rate is at 47% with Tottenham and it marks his worst return since he started coaching. His start with the club isn’t what was in the script and now they have to face the champions. Maybe even more than the match up of clubs is of the managers - Jose Mourinho v Pep Guardiola, the rivalry of argubably the two best managers of the last decade rages on, and each one will want bragging rights after this game. Between them they have won over 50 major trophies.

Tottenham have stumbled lately but other clubs around them, namely Manchester United have done so too and their target to finish 4th is not over just yet. Currently they are 6 points adrift of Chelsea. Tottenham won their last game against Norwich 2-1 but it was a nervy affair against the bottom placed club and the first win for Spurs in 4 games.

Last weekend they drew 1-1 with Southampton in the FA Cup and will face a replay to reach the 5th round, at least they will have home advantage for that one. In front of their home fans Tottenham have already lost to the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea.

Manchester City are 19 points behind Liverpool and they have to concentrate on putting wins together to fend off Leicester in 3rd place who are just 3 points behind them. Form has been good for City with 4 wins in their last five games. City have the 2nd best away record in the league winning 8 of their 12 games and are almost scoring 3 goals per game.

Though City lost 1-0 in midweek in the Carabao Cup to arch rivals Manchester United it didn’t matter and they won the semi final leg 3-2 on aggregate and will face Aston Villa in the final.

Team News:

Tottenham: The club have no new injuries coming into this game but have sold Christian Eriksen to Inter Milan.

Manchester City: Fernandinho is a doubt for an unspecified reason. Aymeric Laporte will be assessed for fatigue after spending a long time out on the sidelines.

Tottenham vs Man City Prediction:

Manchester City are a much better side than Tottenham, that much is clear but Tottenham are obliged to step up here and try to claim something from this game. The problem they have is that when questions have been asked of them they haven’t been able to come through - witness the defeats here to Chelsea and Liverpool. It’s not that they play bad at home but they are simply not on the level that Mourinho is expecting. Tottenham have conceded in their last 4 home games, even against Norwich who have only scored 6 goals away from home. It seems almost impossible that they won’t concede here. This could be a long afternoon for the home side.
