Nations pride themselves on their respective football leagues, and the teams that take part in their events. Due to this, there is no doubt that every league would claim its excellence above the rest, often causing arguments and even fights between their massive fan bases.

In an attempt to resolve the 'ancient' issue of superiority, the following list consists of the top five football leagues ranked on the basis of various criteria. Even though it is impossible to incorporate every aspect of the game, there are some which can be more or less measured and used in the league-ranking process. Namely, the following list uses criteria such as the game quality present on multiple games of each league, the excitement they provide, the valuable, talented players they have, as well as the competitiveness between the league clubs. What is more, you might end up using this knowledge for more than just a countdown. These aspects can help you understand the clubs and their performance, while NetBet Sport can help you profit from such information.

#5 – Portugal: Primeira Liga

While nowadays this league cannot boast with the highest quality of football, there was a time back in the 1990s when football players would give anything to be part of its teams. At the time, this league alternated between 7 different champions over the course of 9 years, but somewhere at the early beginning of the 21st century, things started going downhill for the Portuguese. There has always been a strong South American influence, and therefore there are often technically gifted players to be found, however these days they use the Primeira Liga as a stepping-stone to one of the richer European Leagues.

#4 – Italy: Serie A

The Serie A is considered the highest level of Italian football, and back in the days, it frequently surpassed greater international leagues. At the turn of the century, the teams were packed with fresh and enthusiastic talent which provided exhilarating gameplay for each match of the serie. However, the match fixing debacle shook the league back in 2006, and has gloomed over its reputation up until today. By 2015, Juventus had somewhat improved its reputation, but the league as a whole is a long way from its former glory.

#3 – Germany: Bundesliga

The German Bundesliga hasn't suffered any drastic ups and downs, as its dominant teams have managed to hold some form of equilibrium. FC Schalke and Dortmund are good examples of this steady pace, while Bayern Munich stands out due to its leading role in the league. Teams play a fast paced style of football which has drawn comparisons to the English leagues, however Bayern Munich's somewhat predictable recent domination is the main reason this league doesn't rank higher.

#2 – Spain: LaLiga

Over half the world population are football fans, so chances are everyone are aware of the eternal duel – Barcelona vs Real and Messi vs Ronaldo. This rivalry keeps the spirit going, even though other teams are also doing their best to live up to Spain's expectations, and even spring the occasional surprise, as seen in 2013/14 when Atletico Madrid beat both of the big two teams to the LaLiga title. It's a technically strong league, with patient build up play, and intricate passing moves that many other leagues can't compete with.

#1 – England: Premier League

The English Premier League has earned its first-place position on the countdown, despite disagreement from certain readers. This is due to the great talent which they have managed to accumulate, mould and perfect. Hence, through contracts and transfers, the teams have managed to find something for everyone, and ultimately create more than a few clubs that could beat any opponent worldwide. It can't be denied that it's the most exciting League, fast paced and very often much more than a two horse race, with any team capable of causing an upset on their day. The only down side for me is the obscene amounts of money that success seems to be dependent on these days, but that seems to be the case with any of the top leagues these days, and until tighter controls are in place, it will only get worse.
