Southampton vs Wolves: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 18th January 2020
Kick off at 3pm GMT
Venue: St Mary's Stadium

Match Preview:

Southampton have sprinted 7 points clear of the bottom three and their form has been truly amazing, after it looked like the club could get swamped down into the bottom three only a few weeks ago.

Their total recovery was confirmed when they beat Leicester away from home 2-1 last weekend. An incredible turnaround after losing 9-0 to the same team at home last October, and it was thoroughly deserved.

The Saints come into this game having won 4 of their last 5 games and have not lost a match since mid-December. Forget trying to finish at least 17th this season the club have higher objectives now and a win could take them into the top half of the table.

It is true that overall home form has been poor this season but their form has turned around so much we can only really concentrate on recent weeks and the club have lost just once here in their last five games. Their last game at home ended in a 1-0 win over Tottenham which was seen as a hugely impressive result.

Wolves are a quality side but they have looked a little jaded in recent weeks. Last weekend they drew 1-1 with Newcastle but they have now gone their last 3 games without a win and have no wins this year.

The club are in 7th place and another qualification for the Europa League looks on the cards but you sense they want more and they are currently 8 points behind a Champions League finish. Away form has been dominated by draws with 5 from 11 games and the club come into this encounter having lost back to back matches.

Team News:

Southampton: No new injuries for the Saints ahead of this game

Wolves: Diogo Jota’s knock looks worse than first though and he is ruled out of this game and could miss the rest of the month

Southampton vs Wolves Head to Head:

Last season Southampton won this fixture 3-1.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture the teams drew 1-1.

There is a 60% chance not to see both teams to score.

Southampton vs Wolves Prediction:

One team looks full of confidence the other looks tired and the team with the confidence also have home advantage. The Premier League can throw up a lot of unexpected results though, but we are going to go with the home team here. Form will end for Southampton but it is questionable it will be in a home game. Danny Ings has been in superb form, surely now he is eyeing a place in Gareth Southgate’s England side for Euro 2020? He will want to impress again. This could be a tough game, but we have to give Southampton the edge due to their very impressive form.
