Southampton vs Newcastle: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 7th March 2020
Kick off at 3pm GMT
Venue: St Mary's Stadium

Match Preview:

It’s 13th v 14th with these two teams looking fairly safe, or at least having enough within their ranks to be considered that, but at the same time we have both teams who may not threaten to reach any new heights between now and the end of the season, and look right on to finish in mid table.

Southampton come into this game with poor form having lost 3 of their last four games, last weekend they went down 3-1 at West Ham, which was only the Hammers 2nd win of the year. Some have suggested that players have gone into holiday mode thinking they are safe and it is worrying that the club have the worst home record in the league despite being 13th. From 42 points they have won just 14 and are conceding on average 2 goals a game at home.

Newcastle have not won a game since mid-January in a poor period for the club although they aren’t racking up countless defeats either, they are still drawing too many games. Last weekend at home they drew 0-0 with Burnley. Many will feel the team are safe but the reality of the situation is that they are just 5 points from the drop.

On the road the Magpies have lost 9 games from 14 and have earned just 2 points from their last 15 available, They have conceded 5 goals in their last two away matches.

Team News:

Southampton: Stuart Armstrong suffered concussion last week and looks set to miss this game as a precaution. William Smallbone is ruled out due to illness.

Newcastle: Emil Krafth could be in contention to play in this game after his ankle injury has ruled him out for six weeks. The Magpies have a big list of injuries but no new ones.

Southampton vs Newcastle Head to Head:

The last the teams played here the game finished 0-0.

From the last 6 meetings at Southampton, Newcastle have no wins.

There is a 90% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

Southampton vs Newcastle Prediction:

Both teams haven’t given up, let’s make that clear but both at this stage of the season are probably limited in what they can do. That is why we think we could see a decent game of football, with the shackles off and both teams just going for it. It is more a captains game than a managers one, and both sets of players could really go out there and try and enjoy themselves. We can’t hide away from the fact that this is a big scoring fixture and nothing suggests this match will be any different so we will concentrate on the goals market for this game.
