Southampton vs Liverpool: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League

Kick off at 4:30pm BST
Venue: St. Mary's Stadium

Match Preview:

Southampton’s terrible season will at least come to an end this weekend as they play one final game at home and their loyal fans will hope that it will be a memorable one at least but of course it will be a very hard task having to play Liverpool.

The Saints could end the season with just 24 points and are seven points behind 19th place in a campaign which has seen them lose 25 times. As an example of how poor it has been the club has won just 2 points from the last 10 games and their last game ended in a 3-1 loss against Brighton. Just one more conceded will mean that 70 have been shipped for the season, it’s not the worst as Leeds already have 74 but the Saints have plenty of worse records this season. The highlight is their home form which is the worst of the league with just 10 points won from a possible 54, their fans have only witnessed 2 wins and 15 goals and quite rightly the club deserve to be relegated this season.

Liverpool have had an agonising week as it was confirmed that they have not qualified for the Champions League next season which would have been a surprise at the beginning of the season for a team who have appeared in 3 recent finals. The Reds will have to make do with the Europa League and that is already confirmed and they can’t move up the league or down no matter what happens in this game. In truth it has been an average season for the club sprinkled with some excellent results granted but as early as October they were out of a title challenge and will finish over 20 points behind Manchester City, a team where the gap is normally very close. Recent form has been more like the Liverpool we know though with no defeats in their last 10 games and they have won 24 points in that time. Points were dropped at home last week though as they could only draw with Aston Villa.

Team News:

Southampton: Paul Onuachu has a back injury and will be assessed but looks doubtful. Che Adams is out for the season as is Juan Larios and Romain Perraud and Mohamed Salisu are also missing. Samuel Edozie is on international duty.

Liverpool: Andrew Robertson is a doubt with a groin injury, Darwin Nunez is being tipped to return after recovering from his toe injury. Ibrahima Konate could miss out due to illness. Stefan Bajcetic and Thiago Alcantara are both out for the season.

Southampton vs Liverpool Head to Head:

Last season Liverpool won this fixture 2-1.

Liverpool have won 10 of the last 11 meetings against Southampton.

There is a 70% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

Southampton vs Liverpool Prediction:

Liverpool have the team to come here and score 4 or 5 goals but one would like to think that Southampton will have some pride as they play their last game in the Premier League in front of their home fans and will give it their all. We have seen on countless occasions that this Liverpool side can struggle against physical opposition especially away from home. Backing Liverpool at odds on doesn’t seem like the safest route and of course there is nothing to play for for the Reds, but a "-1 asian handicap" can increase those odds at no extra risk.

Liverpool can take risks and possibly backing some unlikely players to get on the score sheet could be the way to go here, like Virgil van Dijk for example, how many times have we seen former players score against their clubs, his price is excellent value too.

Southampton vs Liverpool Betting Tips:

Asian Handicap (-1 Liverpool) at 1.64

Anytime goalscorer: Virgil van Dijk at 7.00

Anytime goalscorer: Luis Diaz at 2.50

Over 3.5 goals at 1.91
