Losing 3-0 to Burnley was never on the cards for Southampton to start their Premier League account but that’s exactly what happened. The Saints actually played some good football but were never really in the game and it was a disappointing start for the club who struggled for much of last season.

And one look at the fixtures would not have comforted them having to take on the European champions in their next game even if it is at home. Getting anything from this game will be a bonus for the club and they will be hoping that Liverpool’s exploits in the Super Cup in midweek will give them an advantage.

Liverpool in every shape and way are obviously the superior team to Southampton but they did have to play in the Super Cup on Wednesday evening. The match took place in Istanbul as their game with Chelsea ended 2-2 and the match then went to penalties which Liverpool won. So the question is, has the match and the travel and the fact this is an away game going to take its toll on Jurgen Klopp’s team who lost just 1 game last season?

The Reds have started the campaign off in glorious fashion beating Norwich 4-1 at home and then winning the Super Cup, so they will come into this game with a lot of confidence even if they will be understandably more tired than there opponents.

Liverpool: The big loss is Alisson who will be out for a couple of weeks but hopefully be back before the end of the month. Naby Keita has a muscle strain but is expected to be back for this game. Dejan Lovren missed the Super Cup through illness but is also expected to be fine for this game
