Southampton vs Liverpool: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Monday 4th January 2021
Kick off at 8pm GMT
Venue: St Mary's Stadium

Match Preview:

It’s been 4 games since Southampton won and that will be concerning for the club. However because of a good start the Saints are still in the chase and with 26 points they must remind themselves all is not lost and they are only one win away from a top 4 spot.

Southampton’s form is not good but at the same time they are not losing games and have in fact drawn 3 of their last 4. Their last match finished 0-0 against West Ham and at home they have won 50% of their games.

Liverpool didn’t expect this but Manchester United, their great rival, are pushing them and now have the same points with 33 as the Reds and with the same games played. Liverpool only lead through goal difference now and it will be so important for the Reds to win this game before the small break of a week takes place because of the FA Cup 3rd round.

Jurgen Klopp’s team have been very good without reaching the heights of last season but away from home it has been a different story and they have won just twice. Their away games have been dominated by draws, 5 so far and their last match ended 0-0 against Newcastle in a game Liverpool would have been expected to win. These draws have caught up with the club and let Manchester United in.

Liverpool have drawn their last 2 games but they still remain a dangerous team of course and have only lost once so far this season. Whilst Liverpool have not been brilliant away from home they have scored 16 goals which is the 2nd best record in the Premier League.

Team News:

Southampton: Jannick Vestergaard is out with his knee injury and is expected to miss the next 3 weeks. Nathan Redmond remains a doubt and is only 50/50 to make this game, he will face a late assessment.

Liverpool: Naby Keita is a doubt with his muscle and could miss this match and Joel Matip has a muscle injury and won’t be back until at least the end of the month. Diogo Jota is a long term injury and is out for another five to six weeks.

Southampton vs Liverpool Head to Head:

Liverpool won this fixture 2-1 last season.

Liverpool have won the last six league meetings in a row.

Southampton have not won at home against Liverpool since 2016, however they did beat Liverpool here in 2017 in the Carabao Cup.

Southampton vs Liverpool Prediction:

Southampton need the win to keep up the pace with the top six and Liverpool need the win as they are feeling the pressure from Manchester United. A victory for the Reds would also be a good psychological one over Tottenham in 3rd place as Liverpool would move seven points clear even if they have played a game more.

Backing Liverpool away from home isn’t easy, we will get a frustrated side who dominate play but draw like they did at Fulham and Brighton? Or will they be brilliant like a few weeks ago as they demolished Crystal Palace 7-0?

The bookmakers have responded to Liverpool’s indifferent away form and while the club are favourites and odds on there is some value to be had with an away win, and if they click we know this is a game that could be over by half time.

Liverpool have the quality to win the game and come into this one with minimal injuries to their regular starting eleven and have a fantastic recent record over their hosts.

Southampton vs Liverpool Betting Tips:
