Southampton vs Everton: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 1st October 2022
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: St Mary's Stadium

Match Preview:

Southampton and Everton each have 7 points after seven games although it is Southampton who come into this game on the poorer run. After a bright start the Saints have lost 3 of their last four games including losing their last two in a row against Aston Villa and Wolves. There are talks that this could be a long hard season for the club and yet when that happens they can surprise. This has been evident in their recent victory here against Chelsea and from 3 games played at home they have lost just the one game and that was only a narrow 1-0 defeat against Manchester United.

Everton have the second best defence in the league and there has certainly been progress this season compared to last. It might be a slow process but it is easy to see how hard manager Frank Lampard and his team are working behind the scenes. However despite that it is just one win so far for the club but that did come in their last game as they beat West Ham at home 1-0. They are also unbeaten for their last five games and at this time things are looking up for the club who so nearly were relegated last season. Gaining a point recently against Liverpool was a huge result with that game finishing 0-0, compare it to last season where Liverpool won 4-1 so progress has been made but away from home we have to reserve judgement. It was a real problem for Everton last season and may continue to be in this one with just 2 points won from a possible 9. The last away game for the Toffees ended in a 1-1 draw against Leeds and they have drawn their last two in a row.

Everton: Jordan Pickford has been out for the majority of September but he will be assessed after his thigh injury and is expected to return. Nathan Patterson is out for 3-4 weeks with a knee injury sustained in international duty. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has recovered from injury but has some fitness issues and will be assessed ahead of the game. Yerry Mina is still a week away due to his ankle injury, Mason Holgate is out with his knee, Ben Godfrey has a leg injury and isn’t due back until November. Andros Townsend is out until the end of the year due to his on going knee injury.

Southampton vs Everton Head to Head:

Last season Southampton won this fixture 2-0.

In the last six games to take place at Southampton Everton have won just once.

There is a 70% chance to see both teams to score.

Southampton vs Everton Prediction:

Southampton at home remains a difficult game for any club in the Premier League where if they win sometimes it can be by a narrow margin. The Saints then remain one of the most difficult teams to predict week in and week out because evidently already we can say that they are capable of picking up wins here and there but that their consistency just isn’t there and this could be a feature of the club for the season. In truth they much like Everton would probably be happy with a mid table finish this season and perhaps a draw is written all over this game?

As for Everton they are looking solid in defence and midfield and perhaps a little empty up front but Calvert-Lewin is on the mend and new signing Neal Maupay scored a cracking goal against West Ham. The injury to Nathan Patterson is a huge blow though and while he may be a youngster he has looked brilliant in his first few games for the Toffees. There will be chances for both sides and either side really can win this, there isn’t much between the clubs and the Saints have to be respected at home. However Everton’s away form remains a worry, and in recent times they haven’t travelled to the Saints well.
