Southampton vs Crystal Palace: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Tuesday 11th May 2021
Kick off at 8:15pm BST
Venue: St Mary's Stadium

Match Preview:

If Fulham have won on Monday evening then Southampton will need a ‘move on’ as the gap would have been reduced to 7 points with 9 left to play for. Even then Southampton should be safe but a win here would just confirm that. Of course if Fulham have lost against Burnley then this is a dead rubber game as Southampton would be safe, currently the Saints are 10 points clear of the bottom three.

Form has been poor for Southampton and indeed if we took their early season good form away they would probably be in the bottom three now. Last weekends loss against Liverpool was probably no big deal for the club as they would have been expected to lose that one and the score was quite respectable at 2-0. The Saints will fancy their chances in this game but they have picked up just 4 points from their last 15 and are not tasting victory lately.

Crystal Palace are in 13th place and have 4 more points than their hosts. Last weekend Palace beat bottom club Sheffield United 2-0 and that ended a 3 game losing streak. It is difficult for the Eagles because they are safe but also they cannot reach a European position now.

Palace’s most common result away from home is defeat with 8 lost so far. The club are scoring goals away form home in the past month and will fancy to score in this game. But the two clubs are very equal and there is really nothing between them coming into this game.

Team News:

Southampton: Danny Ings is being pencilled in to return and will face a test on fitness issues. Ryan Bertrand is out again with his calf injury. Oriol Romeu could return at the weekend but he has been ruled out of this game with his ongoing ankle injury.

Crystal Palace: Connor Wickham, Mamadou Sakho and Nathan Ferguson have all recovered from their respective injuries but are very doubtful for this game due to a lack of match fitness. James McArtur isn’t due back until next week because of his calf.

Southampton vs Crystal Palace Head to Head:

The clubs drew 1-1 when they last met here.

The last 5 league meetings has all seen under 2.5 goals.

From the last 7 league meetings when Southampton have been at home Crystal Palace has just 1 win.

Southampton vs Crystal Palace Prediction:

This is a fixture that has lended itself to the draw in recent times and the best bet here is to watch carefully how the Fulham game has played out.

The Saints are due a win and they are at home against a team in all fairness of equal standing but if Fulham have won then it just gives Southampton a bit more motivation to win this game. History says a fixture of few goals and coupled together with how the teams have been form wise over the past month or so we don’t expect to see a vintage game. Of course it could turn into quite an entertaining game if the Saints know they are safe and we could see both teams just being able to enjoy their football.

But with the knowledge we know coming into this game we will back the home side. Check to see if Danny Ings makes the team, if so it could be worth backing the striker to score, he will surely be raring to go again.

Southampton vs Crystal Palace Betting Tips:
