Southampton vs Chelsea: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 20th February 2021
Kick off at 12:30pm GMT
Venue: St Mary's Stadium

Match Preview:

Southampton have seen better days and this part of the season has certainly been their worst form as they come into this game having lost their last five. As a result the Saints have fallen too 13th place and with 29 points are 13 behind their visitors.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side are 10 points clear of the drop and they should be fine as long as they start to remember how to win again, many will believe that will have to wait another week playing this Chelsea side at the current time. European football, which looked like a possibility at the turn of the year for the Saints now looks like a distant hope. At home the club have lost 50% of their games and won 5 from 12 but the worrying trend is that they have lost their last 3 here, which have come against Arsenal, Aston Villa and Wolves respectively.

Chelsea keep on rolling and the club have won 4 consecutive games and are unbeaten under new manager Thomas Tuchel. On Monday they beat Newcastle at home 2-0 and in the 5 league games that Tuchel has been in charge the Blues have conceded just 1 goal and that was an own goal.

Perhaps sacking Frank Lampard was right as Chelsea are now getting into the positions that they craved and that is the top 4 and Champions League qualification. They are 4th and four points behind both Leicester and Manchester United and the chase is on. The Blues have won 50% of their games on the road including their last two and have earned 9 points from their last five away trips.

Team News:

Southampton: Kyle Walker-Peters is out with a hamstring injury sustained against Wolves. Theo Walcott could be out for several weeks with a muscle injury.

Chelsea: Tammy Abraham has a knock but it isn’t thought to be serious and the forward will be assessed ahead of the game. Kai Havertz is only 50/50 to make this one after a more serious knock has seen him miss a few games. Thiago Silva will face a late test for this one after his muscle injury.

Southampton vs Chelsea Head to Head:

Chelsea have won the last 5 league meetings in a row away to Southampton.

Earlier this season in the reverse fixture the match ended 3-3.

Southampton have not beaten Chelsea when at home since 2013.

Southampton vs Chelsea Prediction:

Chelsea are odds on to win but are decent enough odds for us to be tempted. The form of both sides couldn’t be any different and Chelsea have a brilliant record of coming here. The game almost looks like a foregone conclusion before a ball is kicked. However no one can afford to be so confident in the Premier League and Chelsea could be made to work very hard for their win. At the same time they have a great attacking side that could score 3 of 4 goals without shifting gears. Southampton are a much better side than their recent form suggests and we should see a good game of football attacking wise but it isn’t a surprise to note just how good Chelsea are at the moment and we don’t see their winning run coming to an end this weekend.
