Southampton vs Bournemouth: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Friday 20th September 2019
Kick off at 8pm BST
Venue: St Mary's Stadium

Match Preview:

This Friday night game in the Premier League should come complete with a rousing atmosphere when these two south coast teams do battle. Although Portsmouth are traditionally Southampton’s major rival, it is worth noting that Bournemouth is just 30 miles away and there won’t be any love lost between these two come Friday evening.

Southampton will think they have started the season well, after a bumpy opening they have now gone their last 3 games unbeaten and sit in 10th position with 7 points.

Last weekend they beat Sheffield United away from home, which is always impressive, in a 1-0 victory. Effectively packing the midfield with six players, gave the Saints more possession of the game, as just one was played up front, and that should be a formation that is adopted at the club on their travels. At home one would expect them to push up higher and play two up front. Despite their decent start the Saints are looking for their first win at home and this is due in part to their first two home matches being against Liverpool and Manchester United, a brutal start in fairness. The fans then will be expecting to see three points against Friday’s opponents.

Bournemouth are in 9th place and one above Southampton with goal difference being the difference between the two sides. Eddie Howe’s side got a brilliant 3-1 win over Everton last weekend and that should put the team in very good confidence to get something from this game. The Everton match ended back to back defeats.

The club have won on the road this year beating Aston Villa, and the objective for the side is clear- to get as many points in the first half of the season as to not get bogged down when the going gets tough.

Team News:

Southampton: Nathan Redmond will be assessed for this game after being pencilled in to be back for it after his ankle injury he sustained at the end of last month. Apart from Redmond, the Saints have a first full team to pick from

Bournemouth: The club have many long absentees. Short term Simon Francis has recovered from his knee problems but now has a lack of match fitness and won’t be back until the end of the month. It is exactly the same situation for Lloyd Kelly

Southampton vs Bournemouth Head to Head:

Last season this fixture ended in a six goal thriller, final score 3-3.

There is a 60% chance to see under 2.5 goals.

Bournemouth have never beaten Southampton away from home.

Southampton vs Bournemouth Prediction:

James Ward-Prowse is getting stronger and stronger and should start and be picked in a more advance role, and we will pick him to lead the side and help Southampton to victory. The Saints are in good form and whilst Bournemouth got a great victory over Everton, it is still questionable whether they will be able to play good away from home.

Southampton are looking for their first victory of the season in front of their home fans and this match presents the perfect opportunity to achieve that. Home win.
