Sheffield Utd vs Tottenham: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Thursday 2nd July 2020
Kick off at 6pm BST
Venue: Bramall Lane

Match Preview:

Some football figures were calling Sheffield United the best pound for pound team in the Premier League before football had to stop for the Coronavirus and it would have been hard to argue with them. Chris Wilder’s side were a regular presence to the top 6 in a season where many could have expected them to be in the lower half of the table. But the Blades kept churning out results and playing good football and proving doubters wrong week in week out.

However since football returned their fortunes have taken a turn for the worse. In the 3 games they have played the Blades have lost 2 and drawn 1 and fallen to 9th place as a result. There is an 8 point gap to 6th so a top 6 finish is looking very distant now and you wonder where United will get their next dose of motivation from. In their last two games they have lost to Newcastle and Manchester United conceding 6 goals and in their first three games back they are yet to score. Although they will feel harshly done by against Aston Villa where they did score but hawk eye didn’t catch it. Can the Blades sharpen their tools once again?

Tottenham have only played two games since the restart which included a home draw against Manchester United and another home game where they overpowered West Ham. Jose Mourinho’s side have played some attractive attacking football but question marks must remain on their defence. This match will be the clubs first away game since the restart and they will have to work hard to get the win.

And a win is all that will do, that is why the club could come here with some pressure on them. They are 9 points from a Champions League finish and 7 points behind 5th placed Manchester United, they cannot afford to lose any more ground with just 7 games left to play for them.

The problem could be their woeful away form which has seen the club win just 3 games this season. They have lost 6 from 15 on the road.

Team News:

Sheffield United: John Lundstram has a shoulder injury and is 50/50 to make this game. Jack O’ Connell is back in training following a knee injury but he may not be risked for this game.

Tottenham: There are no new injuries to report from the club but there is an update on Juan Foyth who has a knee injury and Mourinho expects the player to miss the next few games but make a comeback before the end of the season.

Sheffield Utd vs Tottenham Head to Head:

Earlier in the season the teams drew 1-1.

The last time the clubs played at Sheffield United was in 2015 when the game finished 2-2.

3 of the last 4 meetings has seen both teams to score.

The clubs have only met 5 times in the last 14 years with Sheffield United winning just once.

Sheffield Utd vs Tottenham Prediction:

What version of Sheffield United will we see? If it is from earlier in the year then Tottenham will be in a lot of trouble but the wind seems to have been taken out of Chris Wilder’s team. Tottenham will come here quite confident and going forward they look dangerous but they will have to be more aware at the back, or otherwise they will have to come here with the approach of scoring at least 2 goals.

This is a huge game for Spurs because a loss would basically confirm no Champions League football, and even any European football could be over for next season and then you have a team playing out the rest of the season not in the greatest motivation. Tottenham have the qualities to win but there does remain a slight vulnerability with backing them at this time. We also think Harry Kane is good value to score in this match.

Sheffield Utd vs Tottenham Betting Tips:

Anytime goalscorer (Harry Kane) at 2.30

Goal line (Over 2) at 1.625
