Sheffield Utd vs Southampton: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 6th March 2021
Kick off at 3pm GMT
Venue: Bramall Lane

Match Preview:

Sheffield United will host Southampton perhaps with some renewed optimism after they won just their 4th game of the season in midweek by beating Aston Villa 1-0. It was quite game for the Blades who were dominated throughout (Villa had 72% possession and 16 goal attempts). To make matters worse Chris Wilder’s side had Phil Jageilka sent off after just 30 minutes. But somehow the club held on for a morale boosting victory.

The Blades are bottom of the Premier League with 14 points, they are 3 points behind 19th placed West Bromwich Albion and 8 points from safety, although Newcastle have a game in hand to play. At home Sheffield United have earned 10 points from 42 but they have won 2 of their past 4 home matches.

On form Southampton would be where Sheffield United have been for most of the season as the Saints come into this game in dreadful form. Just 4 points have been earned from their last 30 with six goals scored and 25 shipped in that time. If it wasn’t for the clubs positive start to the season they would certainly be in the bottom three. As it stands they are in 14th place and have 30 points, are 7 points from the drop, and should be safe this season but they will need to turn their form around.

The Saints have won just three times on the road and have no wins this year losing 5 straight and have conceded seven goals in their past 3 away games. Their last away game ended in a 1-0 defeat against Everton.

Team News:

Sheffield United: Chris Basham is out until April with his hamstring, Phil Jagielka is suspended after his recent red card. John Egan is out until April with his toe injury. Jack Robinson remains a doubt with a knock.

Southampton: RIbrahima Diallo is being pencilled in to return for this game after fitness issues. Moussa Djenpro is 50/50 with a knock. Takumi Minamino could return from fitness issues as could Kyle Walker-Peters.

Sheffield Utd vs Southampton Head to Head:

Last season this fixture finished 1-0 to Southampton.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Southampton romped home to a 3-0 win.

Over the past 15 years the clubs have met just 8 times and Southampton have 5 victories.

Sheffield Utd vs Southampton Prediction:

Is it too much to think that Sheffield United can win two consecutive games? The opportunity does look good given how poor Southampton have been lately. However one must remember that the Saints are really under achieving to the point where manager Ralph Hasenhuttl’s job could be questioned in the summer if the club keep this type of form up. The club are loaded with quality players and if they click at the weekend the Blades could be cut down to size.

One has to wonder how long will Southampton’s dire form continue for? It may be a smart move to get on them for the away win but be cautious because as mentioned above it’s just 3 away wins this season.

Also, although we don't expect a high scoring game, we do still expect a couple of goals at least, so a goal line (Over 2) bet looks pretty good value.

Sheffield Utd vs Southampton Betting Tips:
