Newcastle vs Man Utd: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 17th October 2020
Kick off at 8pm BST
Venue: St. James' Park

Match Preview:

The Saturday evening game will take place between Newcastle and Manchester United and through the years they have been involved in some classics.

Newcastle come into this game in 9th place and they will be quite satisfied with their start so far. A 3-1 win over Burnley in their last game was a much needed boost and they haven’t lost now for their last two games. Though the Magpies have not played the best of football they have lost just one game, although it was at home in a disappointing 3-0 defeat against Brighton.

Manager Steve Bruce will always count this fixture as something special given that his team Newcastle, his boyhood club will be playing the team he was most famous for in his playing days Manchester United. With a win Newcastle could move up 2-3 places.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is in genuine trouble after Manchester United lost 6-1 at home to Tottenham just before the international break. This result has left United in 16th place as they have won once from their three games played so far. Even that win at Brighton seemed to come in controversial style whilst at 2-2 the referee had blown the final whistle but hadn’t indicted that indeed United had a penalty to take first. It was a messy affair.

United have conceded 11 goals, and this feels like it has to be a must win game for the side to get them back on track. One also has to wonder, such is the nature of football now that if Newcastle were able to pull off a big score Solskjaer could be sacked, so he will need his players to be 100% focused for this game.

Team News:

Newcastle: Ciaran Clarke will be hoping to be back for this game after his thigh injury. Jamaal Lascelles will be assessed after his hamstring injury. Matthew Longstaff has a thigh injury which could keep him out at least for the rest of the month. Matt Ritchie is expected to be out for at least another month with his shoulder injury. Allan Saint-Maximin will be assessed after his ankle injury in the clubs last game.

Manchester United: Edinson Cavani is unavilable for this game due to quarantine rules. Anthony Martial is suspended after his red card earlier in the month. Phil Jones looks to be ruled out with his on going knee problem. Chris Smalling has joined Roma on a permanent deal.

Newcastle vs Man Utd Head to Head:

Last season Newcastle won this fixture 1-0.

Manchester United have won 3 of the last four meetings against Newcastle.

There is a 50% chance to see over 3.5 goals.

Newcastle vs Man Utd Prediction:

All of the pressure is on Manchester United and this is the type of game that could suit Newcastle. We expect to see a fiery match and one that is end to end, because if United approach this game with caution they could be looking at another defeat.

On paper Manchester United by far have the better side but this match feels unpredictable and that is because Newcastle really are. They were able to impose themselves on West Ham earlier in the season away from home but have not put in great shifts against Brighton and Tottenham. However you feel Bruce will have his team fired up to beat United and this is the type of battle that the Red Devils may not be up to at this point of the season. Simply put there is real pressure on Ole.
