Newcastle vs Chelsea: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 21st November 2020
Kick off at 12:30pm GMT
Venue: St. James' Park

Match Preview:

Newcastle will be attempting to become the first team to beat Chelsea in 9 games in all competitions when the two teams clash on Saturday for this lunch time kick off.

The Magpies come into this game in 13th place although they are only 4 points adrift of Chelsea who are in 5th. Form isn’t the best for Steve Bruce’s team who have just 1 win in their last four games. Before the international break Newcastle were beaten 2-0 at Southampton.

However the majority of Newcastle’s points have come at home where they have only played 4 games and have a 50% win rate. In truth despite beating Everton here in their last home game they have blown hot and cold at home and have conceded 9 goals already here.

Chelsea are in very good form and the feeling is that their batch of new players have settled and clicked. The Blues have climbed to 5th place as a result, are unbeaten in their last five games in the league, and have won back to back encounters coming into this one.

Recent victories over Sheffield United and Burnley have yielded 7 goals for Frank Lampard’s team and a win here would see them go to 2nd place albeit having played a game more.

Chelsea have lost just once so far which was against Liverpool and away from home they are unbeaten picking up 8 points from a possible 12. With Liverpool playing Leicester, Chelsea will be well aware that some teams in the current top 5 will be dropping points this weekend and they could really have an opportunity in this game to put themselves right in the mix.

Team News:

Newcastle: Callum Wilson is being pencilled in to return for this game after his hamstring injury picked up at the beginning of the month. Paul Dummett was close to a return but the player has now picked up a hamstring strain and looks to be ruled out once more. Ryan Fraser also has a hamstring injury but is 50/50 for this game and could face a late assessment. Jonjo Shelvey is being tipped to miss this game and return at the end of the month after his groin injury. Matt Ritchie is out long term with an injury to the shoulder.

Chelsea: Kai Havertz has some fitness issues and he looks set to miss this encounter but if so should return by the end of the month. An update on Christian Pulisic’s hamstring injury suggests that the player will miss the next 10 days at least and looks ruled out of this match.

Newcastle vs Chelsea Head to Head:

Last season Newcastle won this fixture at home 1-0.

There is a 70% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

Newcastle vs Chelsea Prediction:

Newcastle remain an unpredictable team in that some weeks they look like a side who are destined to finish mid table, and yet others boast the quality to be well within striking distance of a European place.

The Magpies who are not showing their best form will be delighted to be back home after the international break and they can pose Chelsea some problems in this game.

As for Chelsea they will be the favourites to win this game and have proven themselves already on the road this season. Frank Lampard will understand his team on paper should win this game although if they are not at 100% they could easily drop points here. The problem for Lampard is that Chelsea were in great form just before the break and he will be hoping that it hasn’t come at a wrong time for the club who were on such a roll.

One problem for Newcastle is that they are facing a side full of goals and the Magpies have conceded 9 already at home, they look like they will be in for a tough match on Saturday.
