Man Utd vs Man City: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Wednesday 24th April 2019
Kick off at 8pm BST
Venue: Old Trafford

Match Preview:

The biggest game of the season so far will take place on Wednesday evening when Manchester United host eternal rivals Manchester City in the Manchester derby, and there is a lot riding on this game.

Where do we start? Well there is the little matter of a Premier League title on the line, that is, of course, for Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s team are 2 points behind Liverpool but have this game in hand to go a point above them. City could have hoped for an easier game in hand, given that it is a derby and away from home.

Manchester United can’t afford to put in a poor display given that their top 4 chances are quickly evaporating. Their 4-0 slaughter at the hands of Everton this past weekend was perhaps the clubs worse performance of the season including the Jose Mourinho months and it is clear that if the club lose or even draw this game they can in theory kiss goodbye to Champions League football. There is simply too many teams above them at this stage of the season.

Form for United has been inconsistent and they have lost 3 from their last 5 games. At Old Trafford in the league they are unbeaten in 2019 and come into this match having won their last 3 games. The worry is that they conceded in each of those matches.

Manchester City are in brilliant form and they have had to be. From their last 10 games they have won every match, scoring 24 goals and conceding just 3 times. It has been a magnificent response from the Champions in light of how good Liverpool have been this season.

Team News:

Manchester United: Eric Bailly should be back in the squad after his head injury. Ander Herrera remains 50/50 after his muscle injury to return. Phil Jones has a knock but it is believed to be a minor one and could play. Valencia is still sidelined with a knock

Manchester City: The big news for City is that Kevin De Bruyne is likely to be missing with a muscle injury and yet that has not been confirmed yet and he may be assessed before the game. He is the only new injury worry the club have coming into this game

Man Utd vs Man City Head to Head:

Earlier this season in the reverse fixture Manchester City beat United 3-1.

Last season City won at Old Trafford 2-1.

In the last 10 meetings, Manchester United have 5 wins, Manchester City have 3 and there has been 2 draws.

The last 3 meetings have all seen both teams to score.

Man Utd vs Man City Prediction:

What gives? A few weeks back conspiracy theorists were wondering if Manchester United would put a shift in even against their rival City. As everyone knows United have as just as much rivalry between them and Liverpool as City. United would hate to see Liverpool win the league and they could indirectly help that to happen with a win or draw here. The problem for United is that their display against Everton has riled the fans up and gone was the ‘baby face’ smile of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer replaced by a menacing look, so angry was he that he has publically apologised to United’s fans. Surely that means that Paul Pogba and co will come out all guns blazing? And yet if they do they may play into City’s hands, not many clubs can go toe to toe with them.

The key in this match seems to rest with City and how they perform. Recently they have been scoring early goals and keeping ball but looking nervous, and if they do that away to a wounded United side they might just be exposed. But as things stand even if United are at home, City should have enough to win the derby, does the hunger remain after their Champions League exit? It seems so.
