Man City vs Tottenham: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 17th August 2019
Kick off at 5:30pm BST
Venue: Etihad Stadium

Match Preview:

The early Saturday evening game looks like being a classic as champions Manchester City face Champions League finalists Tottenham at the Etihad in what will surely be a great game of football.

The champions started the season in awesome style demolishing West Ham 5-0 without even breaking into second gear, and Raheem Sterling who is rapidly proving himself to be a world class player grabbed a hat trick. City were slick and showing no signs of rust, and they have now won 15 straight games in the Premier League.

What makes this game so mouthwatering is seeing two genuine contenders for a top 4 spot battle it out so early on in the season, can Tottenham lay down their marker or will City as expected power through and get the win?

Tottenham created 31 chances against Aston Villa but for the majority of the game they were heading for defeat. The club have a great fitness level and came back to win the game 3-1. New signing Tanguy Ndombele scored a cracking goal and that opened up the game and Harry Kane scored a brace to gloss over the result.

If Tottenham can come here and get a result it would send an early message to their rivals that they will be title contenders, whether they can do that remains to be seen, but they certainly have the quality to do so on their day.

Team News:

Man City vs Tottenham Head to Head:

Last season the league fixture ended 1-0 to Manchester City.

Tottenham have not won at Manchester City since 2016.

There is a 60% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

Man City vs Tottenham Prediction:

When you think of these two you are immediately thrown back to the Champions League quarter finals from last season, when the teams played out a game that only Hollywood could dream of. The first leg ended 1-0 to Tottenham but the 2nd leg had everything. Manchester City won 4-3 but went out on the away goal rule with the game finishing up 4-4. However Sterling looked to have scored to make it 5-3 in the final moments before VAR ruled out that goal in scenes of incredible drama.

Pep Guardiola is the winning coach and Mauricio Pochettino is often seen as the pretender, still looking for his first trophy despite how much Tottenham have obviously improved as a team and the mindset of the club is light years from where they were even 5 years ago. Sometimes big games can fizzle out but there is too much quality on the pitch and we should see a really great game of football. Tottenham have struggled here in recent seasons, and it is just very difficult to go against City recording another win. When their winning run comes to an end one suspects it will be away from home.
