Man City vs Newcastle: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League

Kick off at 6pm BST
Venue: Etihad Stadium

Match Preview:

Manchester City will look to bounce back after their surprise 1-0 defeat against Southampton at the weekend.

In truth it was a dominant display by City but they couldn’t find the breakthrough despite having 26 attempts on goal. And as manager Pep Guardiola said afterwards it pretty much sums up their season. True Liverpool have been far and away the best team but one has to question City’s title defence, losing 9 games is simply too much.

The problem for City, no matter how much talent they have is their motivation in the league, they can’t move from 2nd, their season is over. Now they are waiting for competitions they can win like the Champions League and FA Cup to resume, and it’s hard not to blame them.

Whilst City have been dominant at home gaining 38 points from a possible 48 their away form has been poor and this latest loss is their 3rd in a row.

It’s fair to say that Newcastle have been enjoying their football since the restart and are still unbeaten. Their latest game ended in an entertaining 2-2 draw against West Ham. It is a result they can be satisfied about given that they had to come back twice in the game. The Magpies are currently in 12th place with 43 points and need three more to beat last seasons haul under Rafa Benitez. It is possibly a surprise to see that Steve Bruce is about to get more points than the vastly experienced Spaniard.

Since the restart Newcastle have picked up 8 points from a possible 12. Whilst overall away form is not good, losing 9 games, the club have won their last two and with City recently losing, Newcastle could well come here with a spring in their step.

Team News:

Manchester City: No new injuries for the club, although Leroy Sane has officially joined Bayern Munich.

Newcastle: Isaac Hayden has a hamstring injury and is set to miss the next 2-3 weeks. Sean Longstaff will miss the same amount of time for the same injury.

Man City vs Newcastle Head to Head:

Earlier in the season the two teams drew 2-2.

Last season Manchester City won this fixture 2-1.

Newcastle have no wins at Manchester City in over 15 years in the league.

The clubs last played each other at the end of June in the FA Cup where Manchester City won 2-0.

Man City vs Newcastle Prediction:

City just want the league season over, that is evident. Pep Guardiola continues to play his first team choices, though the worry now is what happens if one of them gets a bad injury ahead of the Champions League resuming next month?

Still it is clear that City will take this game seriously, they keep bouncing back after defeats and we expect them to win this game and play some good football. They were not poor against Southampton and were in fact relentless, but still lost. At home this should be a different story, though the confidence in them to get the win will be further diminished by their long odds so it is best to look into handicap markets.
