Man City vs Liverpool: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Thursday 2nd July 2020
Kick off at 8:15pm BST
Venue: Etihad Stadium

Match Preview:

Normally this could well have been the game of the Premier League game of the season. But three things have happened in between - Liverpool won the league, the gap was always too much anyway, and Liverpool have been beaten this season after their incredible unbeaten run.

However Manchester City will feel that there is still a lot to play for here. Namely bragging rights, and trying to prove a point that at least on the day they are the better side. First Pep Guardiola’s team will give the now traditional ‘guard of honour’ for the new champions. This is sure to hurt City, but is a reminder that even though Liverpool have been superb this season City have underperformed by their standards.

Manchester City had restarted the season well sweeping past Arsenal and Burnley but then they lost away to Chelsea which confirmed the league title for rivals Liverpool. Could that game have had future implications too, given the remergence of Chelsea as one of the teams to rival City and Liverpool soon.

At home City have a much better record where they have won 11 games from 15. Their recent run is good too with 3 wins in a row.

Liverpool were obviously over the moon to win their first league title in 30 years and officially their first Premier League title. They have been fantastic this season and could still get over 100 points.

The Reds have lost just one game this season surprisingly in the end it came against Watford but they have looked like they were going to wrap up the league since December and their win rate and consistency has been nothing short of fantastic.

Liverpool’s form over the past five games has been average for their standard winning just 3 games. Since the restart though they have drawn 0-0 with rivals Everton but got back to normal business by beating Crystal Palace 4-0 at home.

Team News:

Manchester City: Fernandinho is suspended for 2 games and misses this one. Sergio Aguero could miss the bulk of games left his knee injury. There has been no update on Eric Garcia who got concussion after the Arsenal game, he may be rested once again as a precaution.

Liverpool: James Milner looks set to miss this game after his hamstring injury and Joel Matip has a top injury which has been on going.

Man City vs Liverpool Head to Head:

Earlier this season in the reverse fixture Liverpool won 3-1.

Last season Manchester City beat Liverpool in this fixture 2-1.

In the league Liverpool have only won at Manchester City one since 2008, this occurred in 2015 and that is over a 10 game run.

Man City vs Liverpool Prediction:

On one hand there isn’t much to play for. Liverpool are champions and Manchester City are going to finish 2nd, that isn’t confirmed but it is looking very likely. City have just lost to Chelsea though and won’t like that feeling, this match could be the perfect tonic to put things right. As for Liverpool they probably had a few days off to celebrate, and who could blame them? They will be focused for this game though but will also just enjoy their football, they really have nothing to lose. Although no one wants to lose by a big score, that would be a different matter.

Liverpool’s form away to City is poor and they tend to struggle for points here. With little to play for the smart choice could be to back goals, with such quality attacking players on the field.
