Man City vs Chelsea: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 10th February 2019
Kick off at 4pm GMT
Venue: Etihad Stadium

Match Preview:

Manchester City finally went back to the top of the Premier League standings after beating Everton 2-0 in midweek. They knocked Liverpool from the top on goal difference although they have played a game more.

City have had some tough fixtures lately and that will continue on Sunday when they will host Chelsea. Indeed it is the 2018 champions v the 2017 champions in what should be a quite enthralling match. City are still reeling from their loss this season to The Blues which ended 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Pep Guardiola’s team have a superb record at The Etihad where they have won 12 of their 13 games with their only loss coming to Crystal Palace in a result that surprised everyone. Since then City have beaten here Liverpool, Wolves and Arsenal.

Chelsea come here having won just 1 of their last 3 games and while they remain in 4th place they have slipped a cool 7 points behind Tottenham in 3rd and also let in Manchester United who are just 2 points behind them. There is a real threat that the club will not finish in a Champions League position which is the least objective that mananger Maurizio Sarri has been given in his debut season with the club.

Eden Hazard has said he has made a decision about his future but then didn’t tell anyone. The odds are that he will be joining Real Madrid next season. His teammates will know his choice and will this have a negative effect on the team? The good news is that new forward Gonzalo Higuain scored his first goals for the club after they predictably hammered Huddersfield 5-0 in their last game.

Chelsea have won 7 games away this season but have lost their last two in a row against Bournemouth and Arsenal where they have conceded 6 goals without scoring.

Team News:

Manchester City: Vincent Kompany is set to miss this match as no update has been given about his knock. Benjamin Mendy is out of this game with a knee injury

Chelsea: Gary Cahill has a minor back injury but is expected to play. Callum Hudson-Odoi had a fever but should recover in time to play. If these two are fine then Chelsea have a full squad fit

Man City vs Chelsea Head to Head:

Last season Manchester City won this match 1-0.

In the last 5 matches played at The Etihad, Chelsea have won just one game.

The last 4 meetings have all been under 2.5 goals.

Man City vs Chelsea Prediction:

Manchester City will come roaring out of the tunnel and the objective will be to make Chelsea feel uncomfortable from the first whistle. They will also draw motivation that if Bournemouth can score 4 goals at home to Chelsea then why can’t they score a few too? Chelsea’s defence away from home lately look like a rabbit caught in headlights and they are about to face on paper their toughest match of the season and of course Sergio Aguero who is in brilliant form. Chelsea will create threats and have their good moments during the game, but of course City will know by the time this game kicks off Liverpool’s result. We can’t see past a City win in this crunch game.
