Liverpool vs Sheffield Utd: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 24th October 2020
Kick off at 8pm BST
Venue: Anfield

Match Preview:

Liverpool will feel more upbeat coming into this game after last weekend being involved in a fiery draw, which left them with a few injuries. However Jurgen Klopp will be happy that his side were able to go to a club like Ajax and come away with a 1-0 win in midweek in their opening match of the Champions League. The champions will be the odds on favourites to make light work of Sheffield United at Anfield when the two teams clash on Saturday evening.

Liverpool come into this game in 3rd place and could go at least 2nd with a win. They have not won a game in the league for the past two matches, that doesn’t spell a disaster of course but even in these early stages of the season we can sense that the Reds aren’t going to have it all their way like last season.

The 7-2 crushing at Aston Villa will remain a nightmare at least until Liverpool get the chance to play them again later in the season. Then there was the Everton game where Liverpool blew the lead twice to draw 2-2 and saw Virgil van Dijk possibly ruled out for the season after a collision with Jordan Pickford. Liverpool need to be careful not to get too drawn into that match if they want to focus on winning the league title back to back.

Sheffield United have no wins so far this season and look the shadow of the side that made life so difficult for so many teams last season. They are in 19th place and have just 1 point. That point came in their last game when they drew with Fulham 1-1 who are in bottom place. What is also worrying for the Blades is that they have scored just 2 goals in their five games.

Team News:

Liverpool: Alisson is making fantastic progress after his shoulder injury and has an outside chance to make this game. Though more realistically looks set to return for the clubs game after. Thiago Alcantara will be assessed to return to this game after his knock in the Merseyside derby. Virgil van Dijk could miss between 6 months and the rest of the season with his knee.

Sheffield United: John Fleck is out with a back injury and not expected back until the end of November. Max Lowe has concussion and will face a late assessment.

Liverpool vs Sheffield Utd Head to Head:

Last season Liverpool won this fixture 2-0.

Liverpool have won the last 3 meetings in a row.

The last time Sheffield United claimed a point over Liverpool was in 2006.

Based on games played in the last decade there is a 75% chance to see under 2.5 goals.

 Liverpool vs Sheffield Utd Prediction:

There is a burning desire for Liverpool to do well in this game and Jurgen Klopp really despises having to be interviewed after a game when his side has dropped points. Every manager does but Klopp is under that much more pressure to win games like these, especially as United are in 19th place.

We don’t believe that Chris Wilder’s side will have any answers to this game coming up, although how this season has gone so far no one really knows what could happen but in an ideal football world Liverpool should have enough to ease to a win. However the better value would be taking the club to be winning at half time and full time. This game will be all about erasing the last couple of league matches memories, and Sheffield United could be the victims of that. Liverpool have had a slightly bumpy beginning but this could be the start of some sort of consistency. Not many will be backing against the Reds at the weekend.
