Liverpool vs Chelsea: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Thursday 4th March 2021
Kick off at 8:15pm GMT
Venue: Anfield

Match Preview:

This is a huge fixture which tells us another story of which side will be more likely to finish in the top four.

The story of Liverpool this season screams downfall, it may have more to do with mental fatigue, the Reds are looking like the worst defending champions at least in the Premier League era. Liverpool have lost 4 of their last five games and even at the weekend when they beat Sheffield United it didn’t raise any eyebrows. With all due respect they beat a team rock bottom of the league and one of the goals was an own goal.

Liverpool could really make a statement by beating Chelsea, and inflict the Blues first defeat under manager Thomas Tuchel. The home side are just a point behind Chelsea and if they win they would go 4th. The Reds have won seven games at home and lost four and all of those four have been in their last four games here. They have also scored just 1 goal this year at Anfield, and it is quite a remarkable meltdown all being said.

Chelsea are in 5th place and would go 4th with victory and 2 points ahead of West Ham, the Hammers are not playing in midweek. Chelsea’s form under Tuchel has been very solid, though they have drawn their last two games. Perhaps the Manchester United game at the weekend could have been expected but away to Southampton there would have been a tinge of disappointment not to get the win.

Team News:

Liverpool: Diogo Jota is hoping to return for this game after his injury lay-off. Fabinho will face a late test with fitness issues. Jordan Henderson is out for the next 2-3 weeks with a groin strain.

Chelsea: Thiago Silva is 50/50 to make this game after his muscle injury and will face a late assessment.

Liverpool vs Chelsea Head to Head:

Liverpool have won the last 4 league games in a row over Chelsea.

Last season Liverpool won this fixture 5-3.

Chelsea have not won away to Liverpool since 2014.

There is a 70% chance to see under 2.5 goals.

Liverpool vs Chelsea Prediction:

We should expect to see a tight and cautious game, this is something that Chelsea under Tuchel can do, just see the Manchester United game from last weekend. Chelsea look, in this present state, more equipped to win the game but Liverpool are wounded. Normally we could have seen a lot of flair and attacking play but one has to question if this game will have either.

Chelsea want to keep up their unbeaten run and maintain a chance for the top 4 and Liverpool just want to recover. Klopp would almost be happy with a draw here if he saw his team play well. Football moves quick and if this game was being played just 2 months ago we would all call a home victory and a few goals for Liverpool. The problem is their front three just are not on the ball and don’t look sharp, and with Henderson out also it does pile the pressure on the club.

We would love to see an open game with plenty of goals and this being an interesting season so to speak, that could happen. But it does look like it will go the other way where we could have two teams simply afraid to lose.
