Liverpool vs Burnley: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Thursday 21st January 2021
Kick off at 8pm GMT
Venue: Anfield

Match Preview:

There are not many occasions in the past two years where we could say that Liverpool haven’t won for 4 games in a row but here we are. The champions have fallen to 4th place and are 4 points behind the leaders.

Liverpool’s result at the weekend, a 0-0 draw at home to Manchester United felt like a loss for the Reds, it was 2 points dropped at home and what is worrying is that they have failed to score for their last 3 games. Is fatigue finally showing in the team? This game could confirm it and make no mistake Liverpool will be big odds on to win. The one advantage of course is that the players remain at home and Liverpool have the best home record in the league winning 23 points from 27 and are of course unbeaten at Anfield.

Victory for Liverpool could see them back in the top 3 and with both Manchester teams playing a day before them they will know what they have to do. But anything other than a win here would spell disaster for the club given the form of the Manchester teams and how well Leicester have been playing.

Burnley come into this game in 17th place and have lost 3 of their last four games including their last two. Their last away result was a 1-0 defeat at West Ham, and on the road Sean Dyche’s team have been poor with 5 defeats from 9 and just 1 win so far. They have gained six points from a possible 27 and have the 2nd to worst away record in the Premier League.

Team News:

Liverpool: Joel Matip is 50/50 to return after his muscle injury. There are long term injuries for Joseph Gomez, Diogo Jota and Virgil van Dijk.

Burnley: Jimmy Dunne will be assessed again after his knock has kept him out of several games. Charlie Taylor is 50/50 to return after his hamstring injury and could face a late assessment.

Liverpool vs Burnley Head to Head:

Last season this match finished in a surprise result as Burnley drew 1-1.

It’s been 8 games since Burnley have beaten Liverpool and that was back in 2016.

6 of the last seven league meetings has seen both teams to score.

Liverpool vs Burnley Prediction:

Liverpool are under pressure but so are Burnley and for completely opposite reasons. Surely after their latest disappointments we will see some fire in the belly of this outrageously talented and attacking Liverpool side because in the last few weeks there has been hints of Liverpool in the mid 1990s, which feels an age away from how the club can play under Klopp.

There doesn’t seem much chance for Burnley in this game but Liverpool are no value for the home win so we will look into different markets. The front 3 for the Reds are struggling for goals but surely that won’t continue for much longer. At home against the team in 17th one would believe that this is the perfect opportunity for Liverpool to change around their form.

In the last few league games Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino have scored six goals between them against Burnley, and we will take that into account with our anytime goalscorer selection.

Liverpool vs Burnley Betting Tips:

Half time/full time (Liverpool/Liverpool) at 1.66

Anytime goalscorer: Sadio Mane at 1.91
