Liverpool vs Brighton: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 1st October 2022
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: Anfield

Match Preview:

By Liverpool’s standards it hasn’t been the best of starts to the new Premier League season and you get the feeling that they will be relishing this game at home after a break for the internationals.

The Reds are 9 points behind league leaders Arsenal although recent form has been better and they are undefeated in their last 3 games. This includes back to back wins against Bournemouth and Newcastle and in their last game they drew 0-0 against Everton in the Merseyside derby. For all of the criticism put upon the Reds they still have the joint 2nd best defence in the league and at home apart from the draw against Crystal Palace they have been strong winning two games from three and have scored 12 goals and shipped just two. Liverpool remain dangerous at home but it is true that they haven’t been firing on all cylinders and they will want to get back on track in this game.

The best defence in the league is currently Brighton who have conceded just five goals and Graham Potter was doing a fantastic job at the club who come into this fixture in 4th place and have 13 points. But it’s been all change at the club and Potter has gone and joined Chelsea. The new man in charge at Brighton is Roberto De Zerbi who has for the bulk of his managerial career coached in Italy. He gained recognition at Sassuolo where he guided the Serie A side to two 8th place finishes in a row and they only narrowly missed out on Europe last season. For some this will be a like for like trade but De Zerbi has a big job on his hands and obviously the fans had a lot of regard and respect for Potter.

Brighton are in overall good form though they did lose to Fulham recently, they have won 3 of their last four games including their latest game where they demolished Leicester 5-2.

Team News:

Andrew Robertson will be assessed after his knee injury but remains a doubt. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita remain out with a hamstring and muscle injuries respectively.

Brighton: Adam Lallana may return from a calf injury but will have to be assessed. Jeremy Sarimento has a lack of match fitness and is only 50/50 to make this game.

Liverpool vs Brighton Prediction:

Certain players have started brilliantly in the Premier League and certain haven’t and some focus will be on Liverpool’s huge summer signing Darwin Nunez. At home facing a quality club but also one rocking from their managers exit Nunez will be expected to have a good game and right off the bat we will back the South American to get on the score sheet. Liverpool won’t admit it but one could think they will be happy by recent developments at Brighton, yes De Zerbi could well work out long term but losing someone like Potter who was part of the furniture at the club is a huge loss.

As for De Zerbi playing Liverpool away is not the first game you would like to manage and he is really diving into the deep end. Despite Liverpool’s stop start to the season so far we expect to see a comfortable win and some goals to go with it. Perhaps this won’t be a wounded win like the Bournemouth game in which the Reds won 9-0 but expect the home fans to go home happy and this should be a routine win.
