Leicester vs Southampton: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 16th January 2021
Kick off at 8pm GMT
Venue: King Power Stadium

Match Preview:

Leicester come into this game in good form and are unbeaten in their last 4 games with 2 wins and two draws. Their last match ended in a good 2-1 victory away to Newcastle and the Foxes are in 4th place with 32 points and only four points from the leaders.

A Champions League place remains open for Brendan Rodgers side but the top is so tight that if you lose two in a row it is easy to slip down quickly, just look at the likes of Chelsea and Wolves for proof.

Currently Leicester have the rare distinction of performing better away from home, and at home they have only earned 10 points from the 32. The Foxes have won 3 games at the King Power but lost 50% of their outcomes. Their last game at home did show fight though as they drew 2-2 with Manchester United but the club only has 1 victory at home from their last four.

Southampton remain a surprise package this season although they have drawn too many games recently, which has anchored them. The Saints are in 7th place with 29 points but had they turned recent draws into wins they would be in 2nd place.

However all of that can be put aside as in their last match they surprised everyone by beating Liverpool. It was a well deserved 1-0 victory and the club have not lost for their last 3 matches. Away from home they have been impressive with just 1 defeat so far and they have gone their last 5 games unbeaten.

Southampton: Moussa Djenepo has been ruled out with a muscle injury and it could be long term. Danny Ings has Covid-19 he is thought to have recovered but looks likely to miss out for this game. Michael Obafemi has a muscle injury and looks like he will miss out as does Nathan Redmond who is more long term. Oriol Romeu has recovered from a calf injury he will undergo a late test but should be fine. Nathan Tella has picked up a muscle injury and could miss out but will be assessed ahead of the game.

Leicester vs Southampton Head to Head:

Last season this fixture ended 2-1 to Southampton.

In 2019 Leicester famously beat Southampton 9-0 away from home.

Leicester have failed to beat Southampton in their last 4 games when at home.

Leicester vs Southampton Prediction:

It’s not been easy for Leicester when at home to Southampton and we expect to see perhaps the most entertaining game in the Premier League this weekend. Both sides will go for it and we should see end to end play.

There are goals in this fixture and we should back that and Southampton have a solid away record whilst Leicester are awkward at home. However the injuries and absentees are adding up for the away side and Leicester could be welcoming back some key players. This remains a tough game to call, therefore sticking with the goals markets looks the safest option.
