Leeds vs Southampton: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Tuesday 23rd February 2021
Kick off at 6pm GMT
Venue: Elland Road

Match Preview:

Leeds come into this midweek clash against Southampton having lost three of their last four games. The club will be safe this season but at the same time you get the feeling had they just been a little more consistent Marcelo Bielsa’s side could have been challenging for a European finish.

Leeds lost 1-0 against Wolves in their last game and their last match at home ended in a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace. Indeed the club will enjoy returning to Elland Road having had to play their last two games on the road. Bielsa’s side could climb to 10th place with victory and at home they have won 3 from their last five games.

Southampton are in 14th and are two points behind Leeds and so could pass them with a win. However on recent form over the past month Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team would be bottom of the league as they have earned just 1 point from their last 15 on offer. Last weekend though the Saints stopped a 4 game losing run by drawing 1-1 against Chelsea. Takumi Minamino also became the first player to score against a Thomas Tuchel led Chelsea side in six games.

Away from home Southampton have just 3 wins from 11 games with no victories in over two months and have lost their last 3. In those 3 games the club has conceded 14 goals and scored just twice.

Team News:

Leeds: Kalvin Phillips has not been able to recover in time from his calf injury and will miss this game. Rodrigo is still out with his muscle injury, Robin Koch and Adam Forshaw are out long term.

Southampton: No new injuries for the club but the Saints have Theo Walcott, Kyle Walker-Peters, William Smallbone and Michael Obafemi out long term.

Leeds vs Southampton Head to Head:

The last time the clubs met in a league game at Leeds was when they played in the Championship back in 2012 and Southampton won 1-0.

Southampton have won the last 3 league meetings between the sides.

4 of the last six meetings has ended with the correct score as 1-0. Three of those times in Southampton’s favour.

Leeds vs Southampton Prediction:

One would think that Southampton will be safe this season as they are 8 points clear of the bottom three, but the Saints are not out of trouble just yet and it must be worrying to see how few points they have gained this year. The club have a good record over Leeds this century but it is hard to judge on the past when they haven’t played each other for 9 years.

Leeds do blow hot and cold but they are also due a win and will be happy to be back at home. There could be goals in this game given that the clubs do look safe and perhaps some of the shackles can be thrown off. If so, we could be in for an entertaining game and the plus points is that odds wise this is an open market so there is great value to be had.

This game really could go either way, Southampton's form has been poor but we know what they're capable of on their day, and Leeds can be very unpredictable, therefore we will stick to the goals markets for this encounter as we do see this game containing a few goals.
