Everton vs Southampton: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Monday 1st March 2021
Kick off at 8pm GMT
Venue: Goodison Park

Match Preview:

Earlier in the season when Everton started so well that they went to 1st place it was Southampton that reminded Carlo Ancelotti’s side of how difficult it is playing in the Premier League. Southampton won and thus started a run of games where Everton struggled.

Goodison Park has been something akin to a nightmare for Everton who have been superb away from home but average to poor in their own stadium. Everton would be 16th if based on home form alone and have lost their last 3 matches at Goodison. Overall the club have lost 50% of their home games and have no victories in their home stadium this year.

And yet because away form has been so solid, Everton come into this fixture in 7th position with the same points as Liverpool, and are only 5 points from a Champions League place.

Everton’s last game was an absolute triumph for the club as they beat arch rivals Liverpool 2-0 at Anfield, which was Everton’s first win over the Reds in 11 years and their first win at Anfield this century. However recent form is not good for the club who have just one win in their last four and 4 points earned from their last 12.

Southampton are 10 points behind Everton and in 14th place. The Saints will surely be safe this season but are not out of trouble just yet. Form has been poor with just 1 point earned from their last 15 and their last game ended in a 3-0 defeat away to Leeds, that was the clubs 11th defeat of the season.

On the road 43% of their points have been earned but the club have a poor recent record and have lost their last 4. They have conceded 15 goals in their past 3 away games including that infamous 9-0 thrashing against Manchester United.

Team News:

Everton: Yerry Mina is out with a calf injury and he is the only major concern for the club ahead of this match.

Southampton: Takumi Minamino is out with a hamstring injury but it isn’t expected to be serious. Theo Walcott, Kyle-Walker Peters and William Smallbone are all long term injuries.

Everton vs Southampton Head to Head:

Last season this fixture ended 1-1.

Earlier in the season Southampton beat Everton 2-0.

Southampton haven’t beaten Everton at Goodison Park since 1997.

6 of the last 7 meetings has seen both teams to score.

Everton vs Southampton Prediction:

Everton at home have been the cause of many losing bets for punters this season and it is odd to think that such a stable team can have such a poor record. However on Monday evening this could end. Everton will be overjoyed by two things; the derby victory over Liverpool and the fact that their proposed new stadium has been given the green light by the local council. It only needs approval by the government now but the odds are that it will be a yes and a success for the club to move on.

The fact that Takumi Minamino is out of this game is a huge plus for Everton too, the on loan player from Liverpool would have loved to score against the old rival. Southampton’s away form is very poor and everything has fallen into Everton’s hands for this game, we surely only see a good home win for the club.

However this is a familiar story, and Everton keep disappointing at Goodison, therefore we feel goals will be the safer market to look into as we feel this game could contain a few goals.
