Everton vs Man City: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Wednesday 6th February 2019
Kick off at 7.45pm GMT
Venue: Goodison Park

Match Preview:

There will be one midweek game in the Premier League to accommodate for the Carabao Cup final when Everton will take on Manchester City.

When results haven’t been going your way as in the case of Everton manager Marco Silva, the last team you want to be facing are the current champions but that’s who is coming to Goodison Park in midweek.

The Toffeemen suffered their 10th defeat of the season against Wolves at the weekend where the game ended 3-1. Perhaps the most disappointing aspect to the game for Silva is that his side created chances but didn't finish them, and comitted uneccesary fouls to gift the first two goals, and on another day would not have lost the game had it not been for the number of poor individual performances. However the reality of the situation is that Everton have now lost 3 of their last 4 home games.

This latest defeat puts Everton into 9th place although to be fair the highest they can probably finish this season is 7th and they are five points behind that.

Manchester City were brilliant at the weekend and they had to be as they beat Arsenal 3-1 thanks to a Sergio Aguero hat-trick. It has been a good couple of days for Pep Guardiola’s team as they saw Liverpool draw 1-1 with West Ham which means that the lead at the top has been cut to just 3 points. Indeed if City were to win at Everton they would go top of the league on goal difference, albeit having played one game more.

But while City have been nothing short of spectacular at home they have faced a few problems on the road where they have lost 3 games from their last five which has in turn dented their chances of winning the league. Their last two losses against Leicester and Newcastle could be seen as surprises, although with Liverpool’s recent slip ups it almost seems as if City have got away with it.

Manchester City come into this game with the 3rd best away record in the league and have won 7 of their 12 matches.

Team News:

Everton: Leighton Baines came back from a knock against Wolves and received another and it is questionable if he will be involved in this game. The defender will be assessed as late as game day. Idrissa Gueye could be back after his knock but he will also be assessed beforehand. Phil Jagielka (Knock) and Yerry Mina (foot injury) are set to miss this game but could return by the weekend

Manchester City: The only two major injuries the club has are to Vincent Kompany (knock) and Benjamin Mendy (knee) both are due back for City’s next game but Kompany may get assessed for this one

Everton vs Man City Head to Head:

The last two meetings have ended in the same score with Manchester City winning 3-1.

Everton have won just once in the last 7 meetings, which was at Goodison Park in 2017 with a 4-0 win.

5 of the past 6 meetings has seen both teams scoring.

Everton vs Man City Prediction:

Despite form not being good Everton could put in a shift against City, they usually do and have been very astute at taking a point, sometimes more from the club in recent seasons despite the hundreds of millions pumped into the club. Marco Silva is under pressure to get a string of results together but his job certainly should not hinge on a loss against the champions of England.

As for City, on paper they have the team to come here and certainly get three points, but Guardiola will be well aware how his team have performed in some recent away games. It has been interesting to see how City have scored very early on and then struggle to get the 2nd. If it doesn’t come the other team have been able to take advantage of that. City will have to be at their slick best to get anything from this match, and it is up to Guardiola to relay that to his team. Note- Gabriel Jesus loves playing against Everton where the Brazilian scored a brace earlier this season and has scored 3 goals in the last two matches.

Everton vs Man City Betting Tips:

Manchester City to be winning at 30 minutes at 2.20

Anytime goalscorer: Gabriel Jesus at 2.10

Half Time Correct Score: Manchester City to be winning 1-0 or 1-1 at 3.25 and 9.00
