Everton vs Liverpool: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 17th October 2020
Kick off at 12:30pm BST
Venue: Goodison Park

Match Preview:

Everton have made their best start to a league campaign in a generation and the anticipation of what they could achieve next is at fever point. The Toffee’s have played 4 and won 4 and hold a 3 point advantage at the top, and now they will face their eternal rivals and the current champions Liverpool in the derby.

Matches like this need to be played in front of sold out stadiums and it is very unfortunate that this won’t be but homes up and down the country will be watching this Saturday lunch time kick off. Can Everton continue their brilliant 100% start to the season? The only club in the Premier League apart from Aston Villa that can claim that record. Can they beat their great rival Liverpool? Will Liverpool lose two games on the bounce? There are so many questions to be answered.

As for Carlo Ancelotti’s team their last home game and their last match before the international break was a 4-2 victory over Brighton. They have scored 9 goals at Goodison Park so far and striker Dominic-Calvert Lewin looks like a world class striker. So much seems to have changed for the club over the summer. Shrewd signings and maybe a huge kick up the backside after seeing Liverpool win the title has made Everton more determined to do well this season.

Liverpool come into this game after being destroyed 7-2 by Aston Villa in one of the most incredible games and shocks in Premier League history. Not many would have expected Liverpool to even lose a game for the remainder of this year, well that record went quick but the champions conceding 7 goals in one game still feels unbelieveable and yet it happened.

Could this spell bad news for Everton? Surely manager Jurgen Klopp will have his team fired up and yet the loss of first choice goalkeeper Alisson looks to be a blow, will the defence really be that confident coming into this game? Despite what happened in their last game if Liverpool were to win this they could go 2nd depending on other results and that defeat against Villa could simply be quickly put down to a blip. This game will have a lot to reveal.

Team News:

Everton: Seamus Coleman looks to have recovered from his hamstring injury and is set to be ready for this game. Yerry Mina has a thigh injury but will be assessed. Moise Kean has joined PSG on loan for the remainder of the season.

Liverpool: Alisson has a shoulder injury and isn’t expected back for another four weeks at least. Sadio Mane has been pencilled in to return for this game after his illness with covid-19. Joel Matip shoul be available for selection after his muscle injury. There is a good chance that new signing Thiago Alcantara will make his debut after testing positive for coronavirus

Everton vs Liverpool Head to Head:

Last season this fixture ended 0-0.

In the league Everton have not beaten Liverpool since 2010, that game at Goodison Park ended 2-0 to the home side.

There is a 70% chance to see under 2.5 goals.

3 out of the last 5 league games have ended 0-0.

Everton vs Liverpool Prediction:

Man for man Liverpool have the better team but Everton have really caught up and the feeling is that they can give Liverpool a game here at Goodison. In past games Everton have sometimes simply been the 2nd best team on the day, on other occasions they have blown chances which has felt more psychological than actually being second best on the pitch. So the question is has Ancelotti with all of his experience changed that attitude for the players? If so Everton have a decent chance to get points.

A victory for Everton would be huge. Yes local bragging rights and yes beating the champions are very significant but starting the season with 5 wins out of five and maybe having a chance to pull a little clear has to be the key factor.

Hopefully this will be more of an open game than the 0-0 match only played in June. It promises to be one of the most interesting derby games even without fans present in some time.
