Crystal Palace vs Chelsea: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 1st October 2022
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: Selhurst Park

Match Preview:

It’s not been the greatest of starts for Crystal Palace even though they have played very well at times but the bottom line is Patrick Vieira’s side have won just once since the start of the season. The majority of their results have been draws so far with 50% of their games finishing in that way.

The Eagles have a game in hand over the teams around them so that is a plus and they come into this game unbeaten in their last two following draws against Brentford and Newcastle. Lest we forget earlier in the season they also managed a 1-1 draw away to Liverpool and forward Wilfried Zaha is in brilliant form so despite the slow start there are many positives to take.

Chelsea have a new manager of course in Graham Potter and despite being at the club for almost 3 weeks he has only taken charge of one game. The international break has stopped his momentum as a new manager and the only game played so far was in the Champions League when the club drew 1-1 at home to Salzburg. Potter has been given a pass since it was his first game but there is no denying that was a poor first result especially as the Blues had been leading in that game.

As for their standing Chelsea are in 7th place and 8 points behind league leaders Arsenal although they have a game in hand. Form has not been consistant and that includes two defeats from their past four games and their last result was a 2-1 win at home to West Ham. Indeed the Blues have not played a league game for almost a month.

Team News:

Crystal Palace: Jack Butland was pencilled in to return for this weekend but that still seems unlikely as he recovers from his hand injury. James McArthur is out long term with his groin, Nathan Ferguson has a foot injury and looks like he will miss out but could be back next weekend. James Tomkins is out long term his calf.

Chelsea: N’Golo Kante has been missing for almost two months and is only 50/50 to return from his hamstring and may miss out again. Edouard Mendy has recovered from his knee injury and looks set to return for this game but will have to be assessed first.

Crystal Palace vs Chelsea Head to Head:

The teams last met in the FA Cup back in April with Chelsea winning 2-0.

In this fixture last season Chelsea won 1-0.

Chelsea have won the last 10 meetings against Crystal Palace in a row and Palace’s last victory was 5 years ago.

There is a 60% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

Crystal Palace vs Chelsea Prediction:

Chelsea will be the favourites and they have a fantastic record over Crystal Palace but this is also unknown territory. Normally when a new manager comes in there is an upbeat momentum at a club and if the team have been poor they start to gain points and win games for the next few weeks. The problem we have here for new manager Potter is unique in that he hasn’t been able to play a league game as of yet and in the Champions League game he presided over we could see some problems. Going away to Palace is never easy and if the Blues are not at 100% they may run into some problems here.

Palace are not afraid of any club that was witnessed even against Liverpool where they still tried to attack and create opportunities but there must be a frustration within the club that they have not registered more points from their efforts. They could move just one point behind their visitors with a win here, but perhaps the better choice is backing the Eagles on the double chance covering the draw also. Despite having a poor record against the Blues that will inevitably end at one point and some of the games have been very close.
