Chelsea vs Southampton: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 17th October 2020
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: Stamford Bridge

Match Preview:

Spirits would have been raised at Chelsea after they beat a potentially tricky side in Crystal Palace in their last game before the international break. Of course it was the way that Frank Lampard’s team won the game, 4-0. That was the type of performance that will start justifying Chelsea’s expenditure over the summer.

It hasn’t been the greatest start by the Blues winning 50% of their games so far, but it is early days and they need to take the positives, which are losing 1 game from four, coming into this match unbeaten in their last two, and at the end of the day with seven points they are only 2 points from 2nd place.

Chelsea will be the favourites to win this match at home to Southampton, but like the Palace game there will be pressure on them to do so, wins are now being ‘expected’ after the players that have been brought into the club.

Southampton’s stock has risen after a poor start and they come into this game after winning back to back games. Those victories have come against Burnley and West Bromwich Albion. The club will be happy to have not conceded a goal in those two games. The Saints are in 11th place and a win at Stamford Bridge would see them move past their hosts.

Team News:

Chelsea: Ben Chilwell had to withdraw from the England squad due to a foot injury but is expected to be back for this game. Edouard Mendy has been ruled out due to a thigh injury but will be back next week. Billy Gilmour is being pencilled in for a return at the end of the month after his knee injury from last season.

Southampton: AStuart Armstrong has Covid-19 and is ruled out of this game. Moussa Djenpro has a hamstring injury and is ruled out of this game and could well miss the rest of the month. Sofiane Boufal has joined French club Angers.

Chelsea vs Southampton Head to Head:

Last season Southampton won this fixture 2-0.

Chelsea haven’t beaten Southampton at Stamford Bridge since 2017.

There is a 60% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

Chelsea vs Southampton Prediction:

Southampton have proven to be a thorn in Chelsea’s sides in recent years and they will have their chances in this match but we expect Chelsea to approach this game in much the same fashion as they did with Crystal Palace.

Lampard has adopted playing one up front but crowding the midfield, so expect to see Tammy Abraham as the recognised striker once more. As for the Saints they will counter attack and remain a threat but if Chelsea can find their path of play that served them so well against Palace before the break we expect the home side to ease to victory.
