Chelsea vs Newcastle: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 12th January 2019
Kick off at 5:30pm GMT
Venue: Stamford Bridge

Match Preview:

The early evening kick off will see Chelsea who will start as odds on favourites take on Newcastle at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are in decent form despite their last game here ending in a disappointing 0-0 draw against Southampton. But they have gone their last 3 games undefeated and are in 4th place with 44 points. They are four points adrift of Tottenham and have Arsenal right behind them just three points shy so there is still a lot to play for to keep that top 4 place for The Blues.

Chelsea have lost just 1 game at home but their recent form here has not been good, and they have gone their last two games without a win. Their last win came against of all teams Manchester City with a 2-0 victory, where we seemed to see a glimpse of just how good Maurizio Sarri’s team can be.

The Blues have a huge match soon in the 2nd leg of the Carabao Cup semi final where they trail Tottenham 1-0 and we have to wonder if that game will be on the clubs mind. Professionally it shouldn’t be and this is a huge match for the club, any dropped points here would put them under big pressure.

Newcastle’s poor form continues and they have not won a game since the middle of December. But they have had to face some tough opposition including the resurgent Manchester United.

The Magpies are in 15th place but that means nothing given that they are just 2 points from the bottom three and they won’t be expected to get anything here, where they usually beat Chelsea at home but lose away.

Team News:

Chelsea: Daniel Drinkwater will be hoping to be back in the team after his knock. Cesc Fabregas has left the club for Monaco. Alvaro Morata seems to have recovered from a hamstring injury and should be able to play some part

Newcastle: Kenedy is out because he can’t face his parent club. Mohamed Diame is hopeful to get assessed but there has been no confirmation. Paul Dummett is out with a hamstring injury. Jonjo Shelvey is out with a thigh problem. Both Ki-Sung Yueng and Yoshinori Muto are away on international duty for the Asian Cup

Chelsea vs Newcastle Head to Head:

Chelsea have won the last 6 meetings when at home.

Newcastle have not won here since 2012.

Chelsea have scored 13 times against Newcastle in the last 5 meetings.

Earlier this season Chelsea won 2-1 away from home.

Chelsea vs Newcastle Prediction:

It would be a real surprise to see anything but a win for Chelsea. Not only are they the better team with better form, but they have a fantastic record over The Magpies. Plus the big point is that Newcastle come here with some key injuries and look depleted. Chelsea have all of their important players fit and we expect a good victory for the home side.
