Chelsea vs Liverpool: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 20th September 2020
Kick off at 4:30pm BST
Venue: Stamford Bridge

Match Preview:

What a game this could be when Chelsea meet Liverpool on Sunday to stake an early claim and bragging rights amongst fans.

Chelsea have been in the headlines for their trio of signings, Timo Werner, Kai Havertz and Ben Chilwell, and the Blues might even sign more before the window closes. With money spent this is a different type of pressure for Frank Lampard, but Chelsea passed their first test last weekend beating Brighton away 3-1. It was, in truth, an underwhelming performance but at the same time a win is a win and Chelsea will of course take it.

Much is expected of the side this season and they will have to remain strong at home, last season they dropped too many points at Stamford Bridge especially in the first half of the season.

Liverpool beat Leeds United in a frantic and brilliant opening game that ended 4-3 to the Reds. Mohamed Salah scored a hat trick and even though two of those goals were from penalties he looked very sharp. The Reds have strengthened in midfield this week with the fantastic capture of Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich.

It’s early days of course but you get the sense that Jurgen Klopp is not going to be satisfied with one league title and that Liverpool will mean business again this season.

Team News:

Chelsea: Christian Pulisic will be hoping to return from an unspecified injury. Ben Chilwell looks like he will still be out with a long term heel injury. Timo Werner should be ok but has a dead leg and will need to be assessed. Hakim Ziyech is not due to make his competitve Chelsea debut until the end of the month at the earliest

Liverpool: Xherdan Shaqiri and new signing Tsimikas Konstantinos missed the first games of the season due to a lack of match fitness and both will be assessed ahead of the game.

Chelsea vs Liverpool Head to Head:

Last season Liverpool won this fixture 2-1.

Liverpool have scored 9 goals past Chelsea in their last three league meetings.

Chelsea have only beaten Liverpool once at Stamford Bridge in the last 6 games.

There is an 80% chance to see both teams to score.

Chelsea vs Liverpool Prediction:

Liverpool will be the favourites but this is an open game. Chelsea have made some great signings and the feeling is that they will need to make their home games almost impossible to lose just like in the mid 2000s. They have every chance to upset Liverpool early on.

Klopp’s team just has so much quality in it, but this game really could go either way. Proceed with caution as if Liverpool are on it they can win this with ease, but this could well be a game that is very tight with small moments of brilliance making the difference, and it wouldn't surprise us if there were a few talking points in this game. We expect to see very good value in terms of pricing on this game, so we should also be spreading our choices over different markets.
