Burnley vs Southampton: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 10th August 2019
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: Turf Moor

Match Preview:

Participation in last seasons Europa League seemed to derail Burnley’s campaign last season and manager Sean Dyche will be hoping that his side get off to a more positive start in this campaign, if not then Dyche certainly wont have any excuses to fall back on. They will take on Southampton, which on paper, looks like a game they could win given the home advantage.

The home side had a really positive pre season, scoring goals at will and beating sides such as Nice and Parma, their 6-1 victory over Nice was a real highlight.

As transfers go, no players coming in have really raised the eyebrows though Jay Rodriguez from West Bromwich Albion should be able to help with goals up front, and Danny Drinkwater should be a solid loan acquisition in midfield from Chelsea.

Southampton were flirting with relegation for long periods last season before they were eventually able to pull away after the arrival of manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Che Adams has come from Birmingham City but their big buy was the purchase of Danny Ings for £20m from Liverpool, which seems like pretty good business for Liverpool considering his goals return over the last 4 seasons. The Saints evidently need more goals though, and those two players will be charged with providing them.

The Saints went the whole of pre season undefeated but it could be argued that they didn’t play strong opposition, their strongest being Feyenoord where they won 3-1 away from home.

Team News:

Burnley: Robert Brady is out with a rib injury and Steven Defour looks like he will miss this match through a calf problem

Burnley vs Southampton Prediction:

This is a game where we expect the two teams to come away with a point each. We can expect a slow game to start with, the teams are of similar quality and no one wants to start the season with a defeat. That doesn’t mean that the quality of football will not be good but Burnley have so far been quite uninspiring in the transfer market. Southampton will come into this game with a lot of confidence, but they have had trouble beating their opponents lately, so our main bet here would be to go for the draw.
