Aston Villa vs Newcastle: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 23rd January 2021
Kick off at 8pm GMT
Venue: Villa Park

Match Preview:

Because of the FA Cup there is only 1 Premier League game taking place at the weekend and that is between Aston Villa and Newcastle.

Villa were left bitterly disappointed in midweek by a goal that they felt was offside by the rules and a penalty they felt was soft as they lost 2-0 to Manchester City away from home. It would have felt very disappointing for the club because it looked like they were going to hold on for a 0-0 result.

Aston Villa have fallen to 11th place but that only tells some of the story as they have played 3 games less than the league leaders. Villa could go 4th based on their games in hand and a European finish is still on the cards. Form though is not good and the club have no wins in their last 3 matches.

Newcastle have slipped to 15th and their latest defeat at the hands of Arsenal means they come into this game having lost their last 3. Whilst the Magpies are seven points clear of the bottom three they have won just 1 point from their last 15 and they are surely not safe from the drop on that form.

Steve Bruce’s team have had some tough fixtures in the likes of having to play Arsenal and Leicester recently but also played and lost to bottom club Sheffield United who up until then had not won this season, so confidence looks low for the club.

Away from home Newcastle have the 4th worst record in the league with just two wins so far and have earned 8 points from a possible 27. They have also lost 4 away games in a row.

Team News:

Aston Villa: No new injury concerns for the club ahead of this game.

Newcastle: Fernandez is a major doubt with his hamstring. Allan Saint-Maximin is being pencilled in to return for this game but has fitness issues.

Aston Villa vs Newcastle Head to Head:

Last season Aston Villa won this fixture 2-0.

3 of the last four league meetings has ended in a draw.

Newcastle have not won at Villa in the league since 2013.

Aston Villa vs Newcastle Prediction:

Because of Covid-19 Aston Villa’s mid season fixtures have taken a hit and it’s been stop/start from the club as a consequence. They are at home at the weekend and facing a team low on confidence and the thinking will be this is an opportunity for the club to put to bed some disappointing moments.

Because of Villa’s games in hand they have a genuine chance to be right back into the mix and aim for a European place but of course they must pick up points in these games.

Dean Smith the Aston Villa manager will be missing from the touch line as he was sent off in the defeat to Manchester City as tempers flared with the referee.

Newcastle shouldn’t be abandoned, they can be an unpredictable team and frustrate their opponents. This is not a home banker, but it is a great chance for Villa to put themselves back on the map.
