Arsenal vs Tottenham: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League

Kick off at 4:30pm BST
Venue: Emirates Stadium

Match Preview:

The 204th derby game between these two teams will take place on Sunday. You get the feeling that Tottenham would have loved this fixture to have taken place earlier in the month because both clubs fortunes have changed since then.

At that time Arsenal were deemed to be in crisis and bottom of the league with no goals scored but the Gunners have won back to back games now beating Norwich and Burnley both 1-0. That may not be the highest bar to judge if Arsenal are going to continue their good form but it is a start and a huge improvement over their slow beginnings.

In midweek the Gunners made it 3 wins in a row in all competitions as they easily beat AFC Wimbledon 3-0 in the EFL Cup. All of this would have given Arsenal and manager Mikel Arteta self belief and for now Arsenal seem like they are on the right path. The Gunners have moved up to mid table and victory here could take within touching distance of the top 10.

Tottenham did win in midweek beating Wolves on penalties in the shoot out for the EFL Cup. But this was a match that still would have worried fans given that the team were 2-0 up and seemingly cruising. Instead Wolves came back for 2-2 to force the penalties, something that really shouldn’t have been and one has to wonder if Tottenham have simply glossed over the bigger problem by winning the shoot out?

There does seem to be a few because after a positive start Tottenham have lost 2 games in a row. It isn’t a crisis but it is worrying. Those two defeats have both ended in 3-0 score lines too. First it was Crystal Palace a result that wasn’t really expected. Then it was Chelsea but being that Tottenham were at home this result felt like a lesson even a battering, because Chelsea were far superior.

As it stands if Arsenal win they would join Tottenham on the same points, a Tottenham victory would put them right back in the mix again. But while Arteta has kept quiet and tried to oversee each match with some dignity his opposite number has admitted that there could be some confidence issues within the team and that doesn’t bode well ahead of this game.

Team News:

Arsenal: The Gunners have no injuries ahead of this game.

Tottenham: Steven Bergwijn is out with an ankle injury. Lucas Moura should return after his recent knock. Ryan Sessegnon is out with a knock.

Arsenal vs Tottenham Prediction

What a game this promises to be, the beauty with derby matches is that even if they are not pretty on the eye there is always something that is going to happen. Having fans back for this type of derby too will of course add to the tension and create a fantastic atmosphere at the Emirates.

Arsenal come into this game the better team but on paper you could say Tottenham have the better side. But Tottenham do not look to be in a good moment, it’s as if the early season momentum has faded already. Imagine if Tottenham were to face Manchester City now for example.

This match could finish in a draw but we will stick our necks out and back the home side. But in a derby game there are so many little elements that go into winning and of course luck will play a part in that too.
