Arsenal vs Tottenham: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 1st October 2022
Kick off at 12:30pm BST
Venue: Emirates Stadium

Match Preview:

The Premier League is back after the international break and what a game to get us started as north London rivals Arsenal take on Tottenham. Both clubs have started the new season well and there is added spice, if ever it was needed between these two, because Tottenham would go past their arch enemies with victory at the Emirates.

Arsenal have been near perfect so far with 6 wins from their opening seven games. It’s true that they have played mid table to bottom half teams so far and that the one quality side they played in Manchester United ended in defeat. However it was an away game and Mikel Arteta’s side still played very good football in that 3-1 loss. The Gunners still impressed though as they followed up that loss by going to tricky and in form Brentford and winning 3-0. As it stands Arsenal lead the league but only by 1 point over Tottenham and Manchester City, so a lot can change this weekend. In their three games at home so far Arsenal has managed to score at least 2 goals per game and have a 100% record.

Alongside Manchester City Tottenham are the only other side unbeaten so far and from their opening seven games they have won 5 and drawn two. This includes winning their last two and just before the international break they demolished Leicester winning that game 6-2. The club have scored 18 goals so far and rank 2nd in goals scored inevitably behind Manchester City. With City tied up in the Manchester derby it is possible that Antonio Conte’s side could go in 1st place if they were to win here and they would go 2 points clear of Arsenal. While Tottenham like Arsenal have a 100% record at home, away from home they have clearly been dropping points and from their three games played so far have just the one win. There have been draws against Chelsea and West Ham.

Team News:

Arsenal: Martin Odegaard picked up a calf strain before the break but will be expected to be ready for this game. Thomas Partey has a knee injury and will need to be assessed. Emile Smith-Rowe is more of a doubt with a groin injury and is only rated as 50/50 to return. Kieran Tierney will be assessed for a head injury, Oleksandr Zinchenko has a calf injury and is also only 50/50 to make the squad. Cedric has a knock and will be assessed. Mohamed Elneny is out with his hamstring and is Reiss Nelson with a muscle injury.

Tottenham: Ben Davies is expected back after a knee injury. Lucas Moura suffered a tendon injury and he will have to be assessed. Hugo Lloris withdrew from the internationals after a thigh injury and will be assessed.

Arsenal vs Tottenham Head to Head:

Last season Arsenal won this fixture 3-1.

It’s been 12 years since Tottenham last beat Arsenal away from home in a league game.

For 10 games in a row Tottenham have been able to score at least 1 goal against Arsenal.

The last three meetings have all seen over 2.5 goals.

Arsenal vs Tottenham Prediction:

Arsenal have a few injury concerns but these are hangovers from before the international break and the list of players on the fringe will be expected to be back so this isn’t a major concern for them. The Gunners are in great form and very confident and they will try to impose themselves from the first whistle. There are goals and pace in this side and we expect that they will be creating many opportunities and many headaches for the visitors. There is also a hunger and the club will understand that many are still sceptical of them after their loss against Manchester United. Probably even their own fans will be wondering if a title chance is really on the cards or is this period just great form for the club, will there ultimately be a drop off? We don’t expect to see one anytime soon with more favourable fixtures coming up and the Gunners have a superb record at home to Tottenham even when they were really struggling.

Tottenham are obviously a quality side but they could well be heading for their first defeat of the season. A draw here would be seen as a victory, and while they will have plenty of chances themselves this derby away from home has always been a tough one for the club. Of course that is why Antonio Conte has been brought in to level that gap up, but the club are playing a very good side who now look to have a mental backbone and will be very tough to beat at the Emirates.
