Arsenal vs Newcastle: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Monday 18th January 2021
Kick off at 8pm GMT
Venue: Emirates Stadium

Match Preview:

As Arsenal reach the half way point of the season there can be no doubt that the Gunners have been poor so far. They have lost 8 games with half of those defeats at home and come into this match in 13th place. And yet the club have shown enough fight in the last few weeks to suggest that a recovery could be taking place as they try to challenge for a top 10 finish.

Mikel Arteta’s side are unbeaten in their last 5 games including the FA Cup and it all started when they beat London rivals Chelsea 3-1. There were then wins over Brighton and West Bromwich Albion. However Arsenal will feel that they took a step back by dropping 2 points at home in their last game, drawing 0-0 with Crystal Palace. The Gunners were the better team but ultimately did not create enough clear cut chances.

Going back to their FA Cup third round win, the current holders knocked out their opponents Newcastle on Monday night and here they will meet again. The game finished 0-0 after 90 minutes though and it took 2 extra time goals in the end to beat the Magpies.

Newcastle are in 15th place and 5 points behind Arsenal coming into this encounter. The club are looking for a win as they are going through poor form and have earned just 2 points from their last 15. Newcastle have lost 2 straight games coming into this match and their last game was a defeat at the hands of Sheffield United, which was the Blades first victory of the season.

The Magpies have lost their last 3 away games and conceded 8 goals in that time, and overall have lost 50% of their matches on the road.

Team News:

Arsenal: Gabriel Martinelli will be assessed after his ankle injury. Pablo Mari could return after a minor muscle problem. Kieran Tierney has the same problem and will face a late test.

Newcastle: Fernandez has an unspecified problem and could miss out. Ryan Fraser is suspended for this game. Jamal Lewis is being tipped to return after his knee injury. Allan Saint-Maximin has recovered from injury but looks set to miss out due to a lack of fitness, though he could face a late test.

Arsenal vs Newcastle Head to Head:

Last season Arsenal won this fixture 4-0.

Arsenal have won the last 4 league meetings in a row.

Newcastle have not won away against Arsenal since 2010.

Arsenal vs Newcastle Prediction:

Maybe there will be question marks over Arsenal again because they failed to beat Palace at home. However at the same time we should be looking at the positives and it was another game without defeat for them and they kept a clean sheet. However if the improvement is real and Arsenal want to be involved in European football next season they need to stop dropping points at home.

Newcastle have looked poor lately although to be fair the club have been hit by the virus and are coming off of that. This game looks a tricky one for them and they usually do not come away with anything from the Emirates. Arsenal should just have too much in attack and should be able to deal with the Magpies on this occasion.
