Arsenal vs Newcastle: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 16th February 2020
Kick off at 4:30pm GMT
Venue: Emirates Stadium

Match Preview:

Just a win would do… It’s been a long time since Arsenal managed a win, the last being against Manchester United on New Year’s Day, and it is questionable now if Mikel Arteta has started his career well at the club. True he’s actually only lost one game but he’s also only won one and Arsenal have drawn 13 so far. They are only four shy to equal the Premier League record of most draws in a season.

What could give the team a lift is Manchester City’s recent ban from the Champions League and that means that 5th place could be an option to qualify now. Despite having a poor season from their standards Arsenal are 8 points from that position and it isn’t beyond impossible to get back into the mix with a good run of games.

But Arsenal have let themselves down badly this season and from a betting point of view don’t seem that trustworthy as they can’t hang on to a lead. The Gunners have drawn their last 4 games in a row and at home they have won 4 games from 12. They are undefeated at the Emirates for their last two games.

Newcastle are in 12th and are on the same points as Arsenal. Their last game ended in a disappointing 0-0 result against bottom of the table Norwich and Newcastle had home advantage. On the plus side the club have gone their last 4 games undefeated but like Arsenal their recent results have been littered by draws.

The Magpies have a poor away record, their last win was at the beginning of December but their last defeat was on the road was on Boxing Day.

Team News:

Arsenal: The Gunners have no new injuries coming into this game.

Newcastle: Dwight Gayle has recovered from his hamstring injury and he will be assessed for this game. Jonjo Shelvey will be assessed for this game but it is expected he won’t return until the end of the month.

Arsenal vs Newcastle Head to Head:

Last season Arsenal won this game 2-0.

Newcastle have not won at Arsenal since 2010 and from the last 13 games that is their only win away to the Gunners.

Two of the last three meetings at Arsenal have ended in under 1.5 goals.

Arsenal vs Newcastle Prediction:

When are we going to see an Arsenal ‘display’? This game looks set up for just that and being at home against a team who will come out and leave gaps, Arsenal could well be facing their perfect opponent. Newcastle simply do not have a good record over Arsenal, but Arsenal just aren’t themselves this season, so this match isn’t as straightforward as it should be. We’re not overly joyed at Arsenal’s price to win as low as 1.44, there doesn’t seem to be much justification for it based on this season and we would have been expecting to see around 1.62 or at least 1.57 for the win. So let’s go for more value and we will back the home side to be winning at half time as they seem to be letting leads slip in the second half. This game will tell us a lot about the state of Arsenal, and has the break helped the club?
